PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor):

  1. mention the features for identifying fake drugs/medicines;
  2. list some normal use of common drugs;
  3. describe the effects of normal use of drugs;
  4. discuss the effects of excessive use of drugs.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of samples of empty packets of fake and genuine common drugs/medicines e.g. panadol, aspirin, antacid, antimalarial, etc. Living organism e.g. earth worm. Salt, water, poster illustrating effects of drug use, containers.

INTRODUCTION(MEANING)

A drug is a substance that can affect the activities of the body. Drugs can be natural or chemical in nature. The normal use of drugs makes you well, if taken according to the doctor’s instructions.

Some drugs when taken without the doctor’s prescription are dangerous to the body. Examples are aspirin, valium and antibiotics.

FEATURES FOR IDENTIFYING DRUGS/MEDICINES

NORMAL USE OF DRUGS 

Normal use of drugs are drugs used according to doctor’s prescription.

EXCESSIVE USE OF DRUGS 

Excessive use of drugs are drugs used without the doctor’s prescription. Excessive use of drugs is also known as abnormal use or drug abuse.

EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSE ON HEALTH

  1. Blindness
  2. Loss of weight
  3. Mental sickness
  4. Heart attack
  5. Respiratory tract infection
  6. Blood pressure
  7. Stroke
  8. Weight loss
  9. Death

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

  1. Guides pupils to identify fake drugs/medicines using the features;
  2. Pupil’s Activities – Identify fake drugs/medicines using the features.
  3. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
  4. Guides class discussion on normal and excessive use of drugs;
  5. Guides class discussion on the effects of normal and excessive use of drugs;
  6. Pupil’s Activities – Talk about the effects of normal and excessive use of drugs.
  7. Plans simple demonstrations to show the effects excessive use of drugs.
  8. Pupil’s Activities – Place worms in salt solutions of different concentration, observe and record their observations.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

LESSON EVALUATION

Pupils to:

  1. Identify the normal dosage of common drugs like panadol, aspirin, etc.;
  2. state three effects of excessive use of drugs.
