By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of tie and dye;

2. state various methods of making tie and dye.

Some of the pupils know how to dye cloth.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

 

  • Cloth (cotton)
  • Dye stuff
  • Chemicals
  • Rubber ropes
  • Dye bath
  • Gloves
  • Water (hot and cold)
  • Pegs
  • Wooden sticks

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Fabric decoration is the process of decorating and adding personality to cloth (fabric).

The process know as tie and Dye.

In this process, tie prevents the cloth from dye, while the untied takes the dye.

 

Tie and dye is a fabric decoration technique that is mostly common in Abeokuta, Ogun State and some parts of Nigeria.

It designs can be simple or complex.

They can be of a single colour (monochrome), or multicoloured.

Other techniques of fabric decoration include printing, embroidery, painting, and appliqué.

 

METHODS OF MAKING TIE AND DYE

There are different methods of fabric decoration,

1. Folding

2. Tying

3. Stitching

4. Knotting

5. Pleating

6. Marbling

7. Batik

 

1. FOLDING

Folding method is the method of making stripe patterns by folding.

2. TYING

Tying method is the method of tying the fabric to create a patterns or designs.

3. STITCHING

Stitching method is the method of using needle (or machine) and tread to join or pull together to form or create a patterns or designs.

4. KNOTTING

Knotting method is the method of using clamps and pegs to hold fabric together  to create patterns or designs.

5. PLEATING

Pleating method is the method of folding.

6. MARBLING

Marbling method is the method of loosening and pressing together without any definite patterns or designs.

7. BATIK

Batik method is the wax-resist method of dyeing fabric.

LESSON 2 – MATERIALS NEEDED FOR MAKING TIE AND DYE 

The production of tie and dye fabric requires the following materials:

1. Fabric (white, and 100% cotton).

2. Dye

3. Hydrogen sulphate

4. Caustic soda Tablespoon or other measuring instrument

5. Scissors and knife

6. Rubber gloves

 

THE PROCESS OF FABRIC DECORATION (TYE AND DYE) 

The dyeing process –

1. The hydrogen sulphate, caustic soda and dye must be measured into an empty and dry plastic bowl.

 

2. Measure hydrogen sulphate and caustic soda in the ratio of 2:1 depending on the color.

3. Add hot water gradually into the chemical mixture in the bowl and stir properly to ensure that everything dissolves.

4. Dip the fabric into the dye mixture solution and allow it to absorb the dye for about 20 minutes.

5. Care must be taken to ensure that every part of the fabric absorbs the dye evenly.

6. Remove the fabric and allow the excess dye to drip off.

7. Rinse the dyed fabric in clean water and spread to dry under a shade.

The above steps are apply to any methods of choice.

 

 

LESSON 3 – FABRIC DECORATION TRAINING 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays a plain white t-shirt.

 

4. Teacher asks the groups or pairs to discuss how to change the colour of this t-shirt to blue.

Pupil’s Activities – Discuss how to change the colour of this t-shirt to blue.

5. Teacher listen to the pupils discussion and uses their responses to introduce the lesson.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.

6. Teacher leads a discussion on the meaning and types of fabric decoration.

7. Teacher states and discuss different methods of fabric decoration with appropriate illustrations.

Pupil’s Activities – Analyze each of the methods of fabric decoration in their communities.

8. Teacher displays the materials needed for fabric decoration.

9. Teacher uses the materials to discuss the process of making fabric decoration.

Pupil’s Activities – State the process of making fabric decoration.

10. Teacher organizes fabric decoration training.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the training session.

11. Teacher summarizes each lesson on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.
