TOPIC: Adverbs

Adverbs are words that modify or tell us something about a verb in a sentence. Adverb tells us how, where, when and how often an action of verb occurs in a sentence.

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

  • By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to:
  1. identify adverbs;
  2. use adverb in making sentences.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

 

TYPES/IDENTIFICATION OF ADVERBS

Adverbs modify a verb (a verb is an action).

 

  • Adverbs of manner –  these adverbs describe how an action occurs.

For examples – happily, carefully, cheerfully, carelessly, rudely, nicely, sadly, angrily, easily, gently, slowly, loudly, heavily, etc. These adverbs generally end with ‘ly’ and ‘lly’. However, some are fast, hard, well, etc.

  1. The man drives carefully.
  2. He went to school cheerfully.
  3. He walks fast.
  4. The rain fell heavily.

 

  • Adverbs of place – these adverbs express where an action occurs.

For examples – here, there, inside, outside, upstairs, downstairs, ahead, top, bottom, above,somewhere, near the house, etc.

  1. Put the food there.
  2. Our house is nearby.
  3. Please stand here.
  4. The car is parked outside.

 

  • Adverbs of time – these adverbs state the time when an action occurs.

For examples – now, tomorrow, yesterday, recently, so far, soon, later, tonight, then, early, late, again, immediately, etc.

  1. Bring my book tomorrow.
  2. Please, don’t come late.
  3. I will join you soon.
  4. We have to leave now.

 

  • Adverbs of frequency – these adverbs tell us how often an action occurs.

For examples – daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, always, usually, too often, again and again, ever, frequently, a lot, sometimes, etc.

  1. She is often late for work.
  2. He travels a lot.
  3. She call me daily (monthly, yearly…).
  4.  I never swim in the pool.

 

 

PRESENTATION

  • To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
  2. Explains adverb;
  3. Guides pupils to identify adverbs;
  4. Pupil’s Activities – Identify adverbs.
  5. Guides pupils to use adverbs in sentences;
  6. Pupil’s Activities – Use adverbs in making sentences.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

  1. identify adverbs in sentences;
  2. make correct use of adverbs.
