TOPIC: Relationship  Between Style, Purpose and Audience 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

  1. Write their uncle, asking if they could spend their holiday with him.
  2. Write the same letter to a friend, so as to distinguish between the two types.
  3. Discuss one another’s efforts and evaluate them

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of class readers, course book and other relevant materials.

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

  • Relationship between style, purpose and the audience – the audience is either:
  1. Friend
  2. Family member
  3. A peer
  4. A headteacher
  5. Teacher
  6. Parent

PRESENTATION

  • To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
  1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
  2. Prepares list of suitable topics for creative writing.
  3. Pupil’s Activities – Listen to the discussion by the teacher on the differences between formal and informal letters.
  4. Lists the persons that could form the audience of the type of writing.
  5. Pupil’s Activities – Write to different persons on the same topic, discuss the differences in style.
  6. Decides with the pupils the purpose of writing.
  7. Pupil’s Activities – Decide with pupils the purpose of writing. Read the models and imitate them.

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

Pupils to write informal letter correctly.
