TOPIC: IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS 

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

1. recognize the difference between the literal use and the idiomatic use of language.

2. use some idiomatic expressions, and

3. list some idiomatic expressions.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Flash cards containing the idioms as well as their meanings.

2. Course book.

3. List of idiomatic expressions.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

IDIOMATIC EXPRESSION

Idioms expressed by phrasal verbs i.e. idiomatic use of languages as opposed to the literal use, e.g. my friend came round ten minutes after he had fainted. This means my friend came round to see me.

 

ACCEPTED IDIOMATIC EXPRESSIONS 

1. To let the cat out of the bag (to reveal a secret).

2. To give a person the cold shoulder (to ignore him).

3. He has a heart of stone (he has no feeling at all).

4. It’s his funeral (he is responsible for what has happened).

6. Step off on the wrong foot (make an initial mistake).

 

MATCH THE IDIOMS WITH THEIR MEANINGS 

 

 

Note: Proverbs are not idioms.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Puts idioms in one basket, and their meanings in another. Let’s pupils then match them. (There shouldn’t be more than five cards at a time).

3. Uses these idiomatic expressions in sentences that will bring out their meanings.

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
