PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

1. list and identify the commonly abused drugs by their street names.

2. discuss socio – economic effects of abuse of drugs.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

Charts showing commonly abuse drugs

Video clips

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION

Drug abuse is the taking of drugs without the doctor’s advice or prescription.

STREET NAMES OF DRUG THAT ARE COMMONLY ABUSED 

Commonly abused drugs are called different names by the users and non – users.

Some of the commonly abused drugs are called by the following street popular names:

1. Eja

2. Igbo

3. Wewe

4. Stone

5. Ganja

6. Indian hemp

LESSON TWO – HEALTH EFFECTS OF DRUG ABUSED 

1. Respiratory tract infection

2. Increased blood pressure

3. Stroke

4. Mental disorder

5. Blindness

6. Loss of weigh Stroke

7. Brain fatigue

8. Lung disease

9. Paralysis (inability to walk)

10. Death, etc.

It can also affect some body organs permanently.

LESSON THREE – SOCIO – ECONOMIC EFFECTS OF DRUGS ABUSE

1. Poor performance in school

2. Truancy

3. School drop out

4. Financial problems

5. Poor work

6. Poor relationships with other people and family

7. Violence in the family

8. Social outcast

9. Army robbery, etc.

LESSON FOUR – REVISION AND WEEK 7 LESSON ASSESSMENT 

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Uses relevant posters to highlight and guide discussion on street names for commonly abused drugs;

Pupil’s Activities – React to posters on street names of commonly abused drugs.

3. Explains the health and socio – economic effects of drugs abused;

Pupil’s Activities – Discuss the health and socio – economic effects of drugs abused.

Questions and answers;

Pupil’s Activities – Listen, ask and answer questions.

CONCLUSION

• To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

• Assignment Find out the street names of drugs commonly abused.
