PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. give the meaning of natural disasters.

2. show the differences between natural and man-made disasters.

3. mention three types of natural disasters.

4. list the causes of these natural disasters.

5. list four things that happen when natural disasters occur.

6. mention four things we can do to stop or control natural disasters.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

charts of showing natural and non – natural disasters.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION 

Disasters are sad events that happen to man. They are caused by nature or man and animals (non – natural disasters).

 

MEANING OF NATURAL AND UNNATURAL DISASTERS 

Natural Disasters 

Natural disasters are disasters caused by nature such as flood, storm, etc.

 

Unnatural Disasters

Unnatural disasters are disasters caused by action of man and animals.

These disasters are man mistakes and carelessness which are not intentional.

 

CAUSES OF NATURAL DISASTERS 

1. Flood – Overflowing of water

2. Heavy rainfall

3. Heavy rainstorm

4. Strong wind

5. Drought – no rain

6. Block drainage

7. Climatic change

8. Global warming

9. Earthquake

10. Volcanic

 

CAUSES OF UNNATURAL DISASTERS 

1. Fire disasters

2. Collapse building

3. Road and water accidents

4. Plane accidents

5. Rail derailment

6. Mining activities

7. Deforestation

 

LESSON TWO – EFFECTS OF NATURAL AND UNNATURAL DISASTERS ON LIFE AND PROSPERITY 

1. It destroyed farmland.

2. It destroyed houses.

3. Loss of life and prosperity.

4. It destroyed crops and animals.

5. It blocked communication and transportation.

6. It resulted in economic loss.

 

CONTROL OF NATURAL AND UNNATURAL DISASTERS 

1. Avoid bush burning

2. Afforestation

3. Avoid dumping of refuse inside the river.

4. Drive carefully

5. Switch off all electric appliances.

6. Ships and air planes should inspect, properly and regularly service.

7. Cooking appliances should in good condition.

8. Keep away children from all appliances.

9. Call emergency number for rescue teams any form of disasters.

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Explain the meaning of natural and unnatural disasters;

Pupil’s Activities – Differentiate between natural and unnatural disasters.

3. Discusses the causes of natural and unnatural disasters;

Pupil’s Activities – State the causes of natural and unnatural disasters.

4. Explain the effects of natural and unnatural disasters;

Pupil’s Activities – State the effects of natural and unnatural disasters.

5. Discusses how natural and unnatural disasters can be controlled;

Pupil’s Activities – State how natural and unnatural disasters can be controlled.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
  • Assignment – Find out the causes of natural and unnatural in your locality.
