LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

 

1. define civic education.

2. state the reason why we study civic education.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOURS

The pupils known how to respect and tolerant one another.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Textbooks.

2. Pictures of a democratic activity and citizens performing some civic responsibilities in a democracy e.g. senate in session and people voting and campaign.

3. Video clips on democratic activities.

4. Radio Jingles.

5. Video clips, posters and pictures of public health enlightenment campaigns.

 

METHOD OF TEACHING 

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

MEANING OF CIVIC EDUCATION

Civic Education is a subject that teaches us about our duties and responsibilities as members of the communities.

 

Our duties and responsibilities include our beliefs, commitments, capabilities, and actions as members of communities

In civil education, we learn about our duties towards the government and our community and also, the duties and responsibilities of the government towards us.

 

 

LESSON 2 – WHY STUDY CIVIC EDUCATION 

The reasons why we study civic education are as follows:

1. To understand our rights.

2. To understand our responsibilities.

3. To know how to participate actively in government.

4. To understand how to practice democracy correctly.

5. To promote democracy.

6. To bring growth and development.

7. To give room for tolerance.

8. To ensure loyalty, honesty and justice.

9. To ensure obedient and discipline.

10. To nurture and sustain democracy.

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND TEST 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class and available instructional materials.

3. Teacher displays chart showing individual and collective duties and responsibilities.

4. Teacher guides pupils to identify and analyse the people’s duties and responsibilities.

5. Teacher praises the pupils active participation.

6. Teacher uses the pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson and to explains the meaning of civic education.

Pupil’s Activities – Listens to teacher’s explanations.

7. Teacher uses the chart to lead a discussion on the need for civic education.

Pupil’s Activities – Analyze and itemize their duties and responsibilities towards the community’s growth and development.

8. Teacher leads pupils to mention the topics and specific benefits of learning civic education.

Pupil’s Activities – State their democratic, civil rights and responsibilities.

 

9. Teacher summarizes the lessons on the board by using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
