By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of nutrients.

2. Describe the importance of nutrients in the body.

3. mention sources of food nutrients;

4. list describe nutritional diseases with examples.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can state the importance of food nutrition.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Foods are solid or liquid substances that gives essential nutrients to the body.

 

MEANING OF FOOD NUTRITION 

Food nutrition is the essential substance present in the food that help the body to function well.

It helps the body to prevent disease and promotes good health.

 

TYPES OF FOOD NUTRITION 

The types of food nutrition are as follows:

1. Carbohydrates

2. Proteins

3. Fats and oils

4. Minerals

5. Vitamins

6. Water

 

SOURCE OF FOOD NUTRIENTS 

1. CARBOHYDRATES 

Carbohydrates are energy giving foods like rice, bread, yam, etc.

 

2. PROTEINS 

Proteins are body – building foods such as beef, egg, fish, etc.

 

3. VITAMINS 

Vitamins are food substances protect the body from diseases – fruits and vegetables.

 

4. MINERALS 

Minerals are food substances protect the body from diseases – milk, salt, red meat, etc.

 

5. FAT AND OIL 

Fat and oil are food substances, like carbohydrates that also provide energy for work and play – salmon fish, groundnut, olive oil, etc.

 

6. WATER 

This is very important. About 97% of our body is water. Water helps the digestion of food and removal of waste products from the body through excretion, urinating, respiration and perspiration (sweating).

It also helps the flow of blood.

 

 

LESSON 2 – IMPORTANCE OF FOOD NUTRITION

The importance of food nutrition are as follows:

1. It builds the body.

2. It is growth and repair of body tissue.

3. It gives energy to the body.

4. It protects the body against diseases.

 

MEANING OF NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY 

Nutritional deficiency is an inadequate supply of essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals in the diet resulting in malnutrition or disease.

Diseases that result from malnutrition include –

1. Kwashiorkor

2. Rickets

3. Pellagra

4. Scurvy

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST) 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher displays sample of different types of food or chart.

3. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

4. Teacher asks pupils to identify and describe food.

Pupil’s Activities – Explain the meaning of food in group.

5. Teacher uses the chart and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson – food nutrition and nutritional deficiency.

Pupils Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.
