PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. explain the meaning of harmful food.

2. state how to identify harmful food.

3. explain how food can be harmful to the body.

4. mention the dangers of bad feeding habits.

5. what is the different between over – eating and under – eating?

6. state the different between good feeding habit and bad feeling habit.

7. list the danger of eating harmful food.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify harmful food and state the danger of eating them.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Sample of rotten food, expired canned food and drinks.

2. Chart of fresh fruits and vegetables.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Spoil food, expired food, rotten food items, dirty water, etc. are generally known as harmful foods.

Harmful foods are foods that can damage or harm the body.

They include the foods that we eat, water we drink or drugs taken when we are not feeling well that are not hygiene.

Harmful foods are also known as unhealthy foods.

HOW TO IDENTIFY HARMFUL FOODS 

The ways to identify harmful foods are as follows:

1. Fish, meat and eggs

They can be identified by their smell.

 

2. Canned foods and drinks

They can be identified by checking the expiring date.

 

3. Drugs

They can be identified by checking expiring date.

 

4. Cooked foods

They can be identified by the taste, smell, ferment and look.

 

5. Water

Harmful water can be identified by smell and ferment.

 

 

LESSON 2 – DANGER OF EATING HARMFUL FOOD? 

The danger of dating harmful food are as follows:

1. Running stomach

2. Vomiting

3. Weaken body

4. Contact diseases

5. Sickness

6. Stooling

 

LESSON 2 – MEANING OF OVER EATING AND UNDER EATING 

The different between over eating and under eating are as follows:

OVER EATING

Over eating is eating too much food.

 

UNDER EATING

While under eating is eating less or skipping foods.

 

 

LESSON 3 – MEANING OF GOOD AND BAD EATING HABITS

The different between good eating habit and bad eating habit are as follows:

GOOD FEEDING HABITS

Good feeding habits are intake of variety of foods that give the body nutrients for good health.

For examples –

  • Carbohydrates
  • Proteins
  • Fats and oils
  • Vitamins
  • Minerals
  • Water.

 

BAD FEEDING HABIT

Eating too much or less food is known as bad feeding habit or bad eating habit.

It is also known as eating spoilt or contaminated food.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher displays sample (chart) of heathy or hygiene foods and chart showing unhealthy or unhygienic foods such as decayed, rotten or spoiled foods or fruits. Note – don’t use the real sample of unhealthy without nose mask.

3. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

4. Teacher lets pupils identify and describe each food.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and differentiate between heathy and unhealthy foods.

5. Teacher uses the chart and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson – harmful foods.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of harmful foods.

6. Teacher leads a discussion on the meaning of harmful foods and how to identify them.

Pupil’s Activities – Explain the meaning of harmful foods and how to identify them.

7. Teacher asks the groups or pairs to state the dangers of eating harmful foods.

Pupil’s Activities – State the dangers of eating harmful foods.

8. Teacher asks pupils to state the reason why people asked, what do you eat or drink when vomiting or when you have running stomach?

Pupil’s Activities – Give reasons for question(s) in activity 8.

9. Teacher uses appropriate instances or illustrations to leads a discussion on over eating, under eating, good feeding habits and bad eating habits.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson illustration to understand the concept of over eating, under eating, good feeding habits and bad eating habits.

10. Teacher summarizes the lesson on board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to appropriate lesson evaluation and write as instructed.

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
