By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

1. state the meaning of food preservation.

2. give reasons/importance why food should be preserved.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

FOOD PRESERVATION 

Preservation of food is the process of keeping food in good condition and from being damaged.

 

FOOD  SPOILAGE 

Food spoilage means undesirable changes (smell, taste, touch, or sight) in a food that made it unfit to eat.

 

 

FOOD WASTE 

Food waste is the food that is no longer useful or desirable.

 

DISADVANTAGES OF FOOD SPOILAGE OR WASTE 

1. It is unfit to eat.

2. It is harmful.

3. It reduces food supply.

4. It increases scarcity of foods.

5. It increases the price of foods.

 

IMPORTANCE/REASONS FOR PRESERVING FOOD 

1. To prevent food spoilage and waste.

2. To retain the colour, taste and nutritional value.

3. To prolong shelf life.

4. To reduce loss.

5. To increase food supply.

6. To prevent food contamination.

7. To make food available.

8. To save money.

 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Leads class discussions on food preservation.
