PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to expand using the distributive rule.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. counters like beads, sticks, etc.

2. 10 x 10 square charts

3. Multiplication table

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

REFERENCE MATERIALS

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION

Pupil’s Activities 1 – Identification of Open and Close Bracket ( ) Sign with Multiplication Addition and Subtraction Signs

Introductory Questions

What sign is this, x, +, and —?

Expected Response

+, this is plus

—, this is minus

Identify the signs in the question,

5 x (3 + 2)

3 x (5 — 2)

Expect Response

We have multiplication, addition and Subtraction signs.

Teacher’s remark – What about this ( )? ( – this is called open bracket while ) – close bracket. ( ) is the same with { }.

Pupil’s Activities 2 – Basic Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction

Guide pupils solve,

1. 5 x (3 + 2)

= 5 x (5)

= 5 x 5

= 25

2. 3 x (5 — 2)

= 3 x (5 — 2)

= 3 x (3)

= 3 x 3

= 9

Pupil’s Activities 3 – Exercise/Take Home

Simplify

1. 7 x (4 + 3)

2. (3 + 4) x 7

3. (8 — 5) x 4

4. 4 x (9 — 6)

LESSON TWO – DISTRIBUTIVE RULE OF MULTIPLICATION OVER ADDITION

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities 1 – Expand using Distributive Rule

5 x (3 + 2)

= (5 x 3) + (5 x 2)                                                                 5 x (5)

= 15 + 10                                  compare                             5 x 5

= 25

(3 + 4) x 7

= (7 x 3) + (7 x 4)

= 21 + 28

= 49

Pupil’s Activities 2 – Exercise/Take Home

Expand using Distributive Rule

1. (2 + 2) x 5

2. (5 + 1) x 6

3. 4 x (3 + 2)

4. 3 x (3 x 3)

LESSON THREE – DISTRIBUTIVE RULE OF MULTIPLICATION OVER SUBTRACTION

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities 1 – Expand Using Distributive Rule

3 x (5 — 2)

= (3 x 5) — (3 x 2)                                                               3 x (3)

= 15 — 6                                                                               3 x 3

= 9

(3 + 4) x 7

= (7 x 3) + (7 x 4)

= 21 + 28

= 49

Pupil’s Activities 2 – Exercise/Take Home

Expand using Distributive Rule

1. (2 + 2) x 5

2. (5 + 1) x 6

3. 4 x (3 + 2)

4. 3 x (3 + 3)

LESSON THREE – DISTRIBUTIVE RULE OF MULTIPLICATION OVER SUBTRACTION

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities 1 – Expand Using Distributive Rule

3 x (5 — 2)

= (3 x 5) — (3 x 2)                                                               3 x (3)

= 15 — 6                                                                               3 x 3

= 9

(5 — 3) x 7

= (7 x 5) — (7 x 3)

= 35 — 21

= 14

Pupil’s Activities 2 – Exercise/Take Home

Expand using Distributive Rule

1. (3 — 2) x 5

2. (5 — 1) x 6

3. 4 x (7 — 2)

4. 3 x (8 — 3)

LESSON FOUR – DISTRIBUTIVE RULE OF MULTIPLICATION OVER ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION

Teacher’s/Pupil’s – More Questions

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Guides pupils to expand using distributive rule.

Pupil’s Activities – Follow the teacher’s guidelines.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

LESSON EVALUATION

Pupils to expand using the distributive rule.
