By the end of the lesson, the students should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. Explain the meaning of traffic regulations and the need for them.

2. List importance of road traffic signs and draw them.

3. Explain how and why we should obey traffic regulations.

4. Identify some agencies enforcing traffic regulations.

5. Discuss the problems of traffic regulations and their solutions.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

MEANING TO TRAFFIC REGULATION 

Traffic regulations are the rules and regulations made for the control of goods, people and vehicles on our roads. It is designed for the safety of the people using the roads.

 

ROAD SIGNS AND TRAFFIC LIGHTS 

Traffic lights 

1. Stop – Red colour

2. Get ready – Amber colour

3. Go – Green colour

 

 

T – junction

 

 

Stop

 

No U – turn

 

 

No stopping, no parking, no waiting, no trading

 

 

 

 

Bend signs

 

 

Zebra crossing

 

There are signs, which show hospitals, schools where drivers are to slow down. Other includes – general danger sign, children crossing, road work, blind people drive carefully, give way, pedestrian crossing, countdown sign and Y junction.

 

REASONS FOR OBEYING TRAFFIC REGULATIONS

1. Help to check over speeding.

2. Reduce accidents on roads.

3. Drivers will behave well on the road.

4. Smooth flow of vehicles, etc.

 

WAYS OF OBEYING TRAFFIC REGULATIONS 

1. Regular maintenance of vehicles

2. Slowing down at zebra crossing

3. Avoid over speeding

4. Respect traffic sign

5. Trustfulness

6. Straight forwardness

7. Self respect

Agencies that enforce traffic regulations are –

4. Road Marshals trained by the Federal Road Safety Commission.

FUNCTIONS OF AGENCIES ENFORCING TRAFFIC REGULATIONS 

1. Preventing or minimizing accidents on the roads.

2. Clearing obstructions on any part of the roads.

3. Educating drivers, motorists and other members of the public generally on the proper use of the roads.

4. The standardization of road traffic codes.

5. Giving prompt attention and care to victims of accidents.

6. Regulating the use of mobile phones by motorists.

7. Regulating the use of seat belts and other safety devices.

8. Regulating the use of motorcycles on the roads.

9. Arrest and prosecute persons suspected of having committed any traffic offence.

 

 

CAUSES OF ROAD ACCIDENTS 

Accident is an unplanned or unexpected events which result in injury or destroy of lives and property.

One of the major causes of road accidents is not obeying traffic signs, rules and regulations.

The consequences of not obeying traffic signs, rules and regulations can lead to minor or severe injury, causing temporary and permanent damage to the body, destroy lives and damage parts/whole of the vehicles.

 

PROBLEMS OF TRAFFIC REGULATIONS

SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS OF TRAFFIC REGULATIONS

Solutions to the problems include the following:

1. Regular maintenance of our roads by the government.

2. Regular patrol of roads by traffic officers.

3.bImposition of fines on traffic offenders.

4. Regular vehicle inspection.

5. Removal of bad vehicles from the roads.

6. Prosecution of hawkers on the roads.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the students some questions;

2. Helps the pupils to define the meaning of traffic regulations and points out the need for them;

Student’s Activities – Explain the meaning of traffic regulations and points out the need for them.

3. Invites a resource person to talk on pupils on Highway Code and signs;

Student’s Activities – Look at the traffic signs and draw them. Listen to the resources persons.

4. Asks pupils related questions;

Student’s Activities – Answer teacher’s questions.

5. Explain how and why we should obey traffic regulations.
