SECOND TERM

WEEK 6

PRIMARY 5

THEME – YOU AND ENERGY

PREVIOUS LESSON – Heat and Energy (Conversion) – Meaning of Energy Conversion | Importance of Energy Conversion Primary 5 (Basic 5) Term 2 Week 5 Basic Technology

TOPIC – HEAT AND TEMPERATURE

LEARNING AREA

1. Introduction

2. Meaning of Heat

3. Meaning of Temperature

4. Different Between Heat and Temperature

5. Types of Thermometer

6. Taking measurement with clinical thermometer

7. Lesson Evaluation and Weekly Assessment (Test)

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. distinguish between heat and temperature.

2. identify and name different types of thermometers

3. use the thermometer to measure the temperature of objects accurately.

RATIONALE

Heat is a form of energy. In everyday language, heat and temperature are often used as if they are the same thing.

They are not. When a pot of water is heated it gains energy and becomes hotter. Its temperature goes up. Heat is the cause, a rise in temperature is the effect.

When a substance is hot, the temperature is high and when the substance is less hot (cold), the temperature is lower. Temperature can be measured with a thermometer.

The concept of heat and temperature will enable the pupils to understand and state the difference between heat and temperature.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify changing in weather – Hot (warm) or Cold (cool).

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. A chart showing different thermometers

2. Different thermometers

4. Flask of hot water.

5. Some ice water.

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

REFERENCE MATERIALS

1. Scheme of Work

2. 9 – Years Basic Education Curriculum

3. Course Book

4. All Relevant Material

5. Online Information

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

ACTIVITY 1 – QUESTIONS

1. What happens when you stay long under the sun?

Feel heat under the sun.

2. What do you feel in a room where there is no fan or A/C?

Feel heat in a room without fan.

3. What do you feel in the kitchen when you are cooking?

Feel heat in the kitchen.

MEANING OF HEAT

Heat is a form of energy that increases the level of hotness of a body.

MEANING OF TEMPERATURE

Temperature is the degree. Of hotness (warmness) or coldness (coolness) of the body – water, iron, food, etc.

That’s, how hot (hot) or cold (cool) a thing (water, human body, etc.) is.

 ACTIVITY 2 – INSTRUCTIONS

Display charts showing –

1. A mother using her hand to check the temperature of her child.

Instructional chart or picture….

2. A nurse/doctor using thermometer to check the temperature of her patient.

Instructional chart or picture….

MEANING OF THERMOMETER

Thermometer is an device used for measuring temperature of a body.

For example, how hot or cold is water, food, iron, human body, etc.

TYPES OF THERMOMETER

1. Clinical or Medical thermometers

2. Laboratory thermometers

3. Infrared ear thermometers

4. Infrared thermometer –

5. Mercury thermometers

6. Digit or analogue thermometer

CLINICAL OR MEDICAL THERMOMETERS

Clinical or medical thermometer is used to measure body temperature.

DIGIT OR ANALOGUE THERMOMETERS

All thermometers are either in digital and analogue mode.

QUICK EVALUATION

Ask the pupils,

1. What is  the different between heat and temperature?

2. Demonstrate how your parent check your body’s temperature.

3. Demonstrate how the nurse check body’s temperature at the hospital.

4. What is thermometer?

5. Mention 3 types of thermometer.

ASSIGNMENT

Get ready for an excursion to the nearest hospital to find out about the uses and Importance of clinical thermometer.

LESSON 2 – MEASUREMENTS OF A BODY TEMPERATURE – PRACTICAL

Organize an excursion to the nearest hospital for random check of body’s temperature.

LESSON 3 – MANUAL MEASUREMENT OF TEMPERATURE (THE BOILING WATER)

ACTIVITY 3 – INSTRUCTIONS

1. Put some water in a pot and heat it gently.

2. Put your hand in it after one minute and tell how hot or cold it is.

3. Do this every one minute as you continue to heat the water. Stop it when it is too hot for you.

4. Write down your answer.

  • Warm
  • Very warm
  • Hot
  • Very hot

Note – The teacher is master and leader of this experiment.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Uses the activity 1 and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson – heat.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to contribution to the lesson discussion.

3. Leads a discussion on how the body’s heat increased or decreased.

4. Continues with the activity 1 and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson – temperature.

5. Discuss how the body’s temperature increased or decreased.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to contribution to the lesson discussion.

6. Guides pupils discussion of different between heat and temperature.

Pupil’s Activities – Uses the contents of activity 1 to different between heat and temperature.

7. Uses the activity 2 to the meaning of thermometer.

8. Displays samples or charts showing different types of thermometer.

9. Uses samples or charts to guide the pupils to identify different types of thermometers and their Uses.

Pupil’s Activities – Handle and examine thermometer.

10. Organizes an excursion to the nearest hospital for random check of body’s temperature.

Pupil’s Activities – Take part in the excursion.

11. Demonstrates the correct method of using the thermometers (it available) to measure the temperature of objects. If not available, use the contents of the activity to guide how temperatures are measured manually.

Pupil’s Activities – Practice, measure and record accurately the temperature of things e.g. hot water, their bodies, etc.

12. Summarizes the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the lesson summary and write as instructed.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
