PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. identify and write the units and symbol of temperature scale.

2. relationship between degree Celsius and Degree Fahrenheit.

3. use the thermometer to measure the temperature of objects accurately.

 

 

RATIONALE

Heat is the cause, a rise in temperature is the effect. When a substance is hot, the temperature is high and when the substance is less hot (cold), the temperature is lower.

Temperature can be measured with a thermometer in degree Celsius and degree Fahrenheit called unit. The relationship between the two (2) units can be expressed as unit of one another

The pupils can add, subtract, divide and multiple.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. A chart showing different thermometers

2. A chart showing the units and symbols of temperature correctly.

4. Flask of hot water.

5. Some ice water.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Heat is the cause, a rise in temperature is the effect.

When a substance is hot, the temperature is high and when the substance is less hot (cold), the temperature is lower.

Temperature can be measured with a thermometer in degree Celsius and degree Fahrenheit called unit.

The relationship between the two (2) units can be expressed as unit of one another

 

 

MEANING OF THERMOMETER

Thermometer is an device used to measure temperature of a body or an object.

For example, how hot or cold is water, food, iron, human body, etc.

 

 

FEATURES OF A THERMOMETER 

The features of thermometer are

1. Scale – degree Celsius (ºC) and Fahrenheit (ºF)

2. Work liquid

3. Reference point

4. Bulb

 

 

UNITS AND SYMBOLS OF TEMPERATURE SCALE

There are two (2) units of measurement for temperature,namely –

1. Degree Celsius (ºC)

2. Degree Fahrenheit (ºF)

 

QUICK EVALUATION

Ask the pupils,

ASSIGNMENT 

Solve the following –

1. Divide 20 by 5, then multiply by 9, then add 32.

2. Divide 50 by 5, then multiply by 9, then add 32.

3. Divide 75 by 5, then multiply by 9, then add 32.

 

 

LESSON 2 – CONVERSION OF CELSIUS TO FAHRENHEIT

Remember the Hint — Celsius (°C) to Fahrenheit (°F), Divide by 5, then multiply by 9, then add 32

 

Working Example 1

Convert 25° Celsius to Fahrenheit.

First, 25°/5 = 5

Then, 5 × 9 = 45

Then, 45 + 32 = 77° F

 

Working Example 2

Convert 30º Celsius to Fahrenheit.

First, 30ª/5 = 6

Then, 6 x 9 = 54

Therefore,

54 + 32 = 86º F

 

QUICK EVALUATION 

Convert

1. 20º Celsius to Fahrenheit.

2. 15º Celsius to Fahrenheit.

 

ASSIGNMENT

1. Subtract 32 from 77, then multiply by 5, then divide by 9.

2. Subtract 32 from 86, then multiply by 5, then divide by 9.

 

 

LESSON 3 – CONVERSION OF CELSIUS TO FAHRENHEIT

Remember the Hint —°F to °C: Subtract 32, then multiply by 5, then divide by 9.

 

Working Example 1

Convert 77º Fahrenheit to degree Celsius.

First, 77º — 32 = 45

Then, 45 x 5 = 225

Therefore,

225/9 = 25ºC

 

Working Example 2

Convert 86º Fahrenheit to degree Celsius.

First, 86º —32 = 54

Then, 54 x 5 = 270

Therefore,

270/9 = 30º Celsius

LESSON 3 – THE USES OF THERMOMETER 

Thermometers are used to measure temperature. Below is a list of some uses in which a thermometer might be used.

1. It is used to measure the outdoor temperature.

2. It is used to measure body temperature – the doctor.

3. It is used to measure body temperature when someone is ill to determine if the person has a fever.

4. It is used to measure the temperature of an experiment.

5. It is used to measure the temperature of a cold room.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Displays a sample of thermometer, if available or chart showing digital and analogue thermometer.

3. Lets pupils identify and examine the contents of the chart.

4. Guides pupils to identify the features of the thermometer.
