PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. Name two useful farm insects.

2. Identify local useful insects and mention their usefulness to farmers.

3. Mention that some useful insects can be harmful.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify a butterfly, bee, grasshopper, etc.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Honey

2. Chart or sample of useful insects

3. Insect nets

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Harmful Farm Insects (Primary 2)

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES 

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Tasting Honey

Pupil’s Activities – Discuss the taste of honey and how is produced.

Teacher’s Activities – Listen to the pupil’s discussion.

Teacher’s remarks – Honey is a sweet and produced by insects called honey bees. Honey bee is a USEFUL FARM INSECT.

USEFUL FARM INSECTS

Useful Farm Insects are insects are useful to crops and people.

These insects kill and eat the other insects including harmful insects.

Some of the useful farm insects are very harmful and dangerous, for example – honey bees.

They are dangerous to people and farm animals but friendly to farm crops. This is because, they can kill people and animals as well.

 

IDENTIFICATION OF USEFUL INSECTS 

USEFUL FARM INSECTS

1. Other useful farm Insects are –

1. Butterflies

2. Bees

3. Termites

4. Praying mantis, etc.

 

USEFULNESS OF INSECTS 

1. They pollinate flowers.

2. They produce honey.

3. They kill harmful Insects.

4. They enriched the soil.

5. They maintain soil structure.

6. Some of them eatable, for example – crickets, wind termite, etc.

 

USEFUL BUT HARMFUL INSECTS 

1. Bees

2. Termites

3. Ants, etc.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Displays and identify preserved or use samples or listed insects.

Pupil’s Activities – Observe closely and identify useful insects.

3. Guides pupils to observe insects pollinating flowers in the school farm.

Pupil’s Activities – Watch insects pollinating flower.

4. Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Catches useful insects with insects with insect nets.

5. Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Draws and labels parts of insect.

Summarizes the lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
