By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –
1. differentiate between living and non living things.
2. give reasons why animals are living things.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION
MEANING OF NON LIVING THINGS
Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Asks the pupils, what is non living thing?
Living things are things that are alive.
Non living things are things that are not alive.
They do not need air, food or water. They do not move. They do not grow and do not reproduce.

LESSON TWO – ANIMALS AS A LIVING THINGS
Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities –
- Asks the pupils to mention 5 animals in the water, 5 animals on the land and 5 animals in the air.
- Takes pupils on a nature walk to identify and observe animals.
- Also, explains characteristics which the observed animals display on the spot.
- Asks pupils to differentiate between life animals and toy animals and notes their points on the board.
CHARACTERISTICS OF ANIMALS AS A LIVING THINGS
Animals can move from one place to another by flying, walking, running, and swimming.
Animals eat (feed) on plants and other animals.
Animals breath in oxygen and breath out carbon oxide.
Animals grow in height and size.
Animals reproduce young ones.
Animals die and decay.
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Takes pupils on a nature walk to observe animals (explains characteristics which the observed animals display on the spot).
Pupil’s Activities – Observe animals in their localities.
3. Guides pupils to identify animals as living things. (explain growth, irritability, reproduction as it affects animals).

- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
