TOPIC – HIV/AIDS AND DRUG ABUSE

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

 

1. explain the meaning of drug abuse.

2. mention dangers of drug abuse.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOURS 

The pupils can identify and name some drugs.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Pupils’ textbooks.

2. Posters on war against drug abuse.

3. Photographs showing drug addicts.

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Public Enlightenment Campaign means creating awareness about issues that affect the general public.

 

For examples,

1. Drug abuse

2. HIV/AIDS

 

GUEST SPEAKER

Invites resource persons to talk on HIV/AIDS as public enlightenment.

 

HIV/AIDS EDUCATION

HIV/AIDS is an infectious disease that can be transmitted through contact with infected blood, sex and sharing of sharp objects.

HIV stands Human Immunodeficiency Virus

AID stands Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome

HIV causes AIDS and weakens the body’s ability to fight other infections.

 

SYMPTOMS OF HIV/AIDS 

The symptoms of HIV/AIDS are as follows:

 

1. Swollen lymph nodes

2. Weight loss

3. Fever

4. Diarrhoea and cough, etc.

 

 

LESSON 2 – DRUG ABUSE 

GUEST SPEAKER 

Invites resource persons to talk on drug abuse as public enlightenment and its dangers.

 

MEANING OF DRUG ABUSE 

Drug abuse is the use of drugs without the advice of a qualified doctors.

Drug abuse is also known as wrong use of drugs.

 

DANGERS OF DRUG ABUSE 

Drug abuse is the use of drugs without the advice of a qualified doctor or pharmacist.

 

The effects or the dangers of drug abuse are –

1. Mental illness

2. Blindness

3. Lung disease

4. Accident

5. Addiction

6. Dropout of school

7. Poor performance in school

8. Violence in the family

9. Poor relationships with other people and family

9. Paralysis (inability to walk)

10. Death, etc.

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST) 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

 

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class and available instructional materials.

3. Teacher displays chart showing people with posters or placards with the writing (Say No to Drug Abuse and No Your HIV Status).

4. Teacher lets pupils as pupils or pairs to studies and describe the content of the chart.

Pupil’s Activities – Learners describe the content of the chart.

5. Teacher listens to the pupils and uses their relevant responses to introduce the lesson.

Pupil’s Activities – Learners pay attention to the lesson introduction to understanding the concept of the lessons.

6. Teacher introduces guest speakers and allows each of them to speak on,

Day 1 – HIV and its symptoms.

DAY 2 – Meaning and Dangers of Drug Abuse

Pupil’s Activities – Respond to resource persons’ questions as well as ask their own questions.

 

7. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board by asking appropriate questions.

Pupil’s Activities – Learners participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding to the questions correctly and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
