3. State their uses.
4. State general maintenance of simple farm tools.

The students can differentiate between agricultural mechanisation and non agricultural mechanisation.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
MEANING OF SIMPLE FARM TOOLS
Simple farm tools are handy made tools used by small scale farmers.
These tools are locally made handy tools.
EXAMPLES OF SIMPLE FARM TOOLS
Here are some common simple farm tools –
1. Cutlass
2. Hoe
3. Rake
4. Watering can
5. Wheel barrow
6. Basket
7. Head pan
8. Hand fork
9. Garden fork
10. Axe
12. Pick axe
13. Shovel

DESCRIPTION OF EACH OF THE TOOLS
Make some of the simple farm tools available for the students to identify and describe. Based on the student’s description, let them to write in their notes.
USES OF SIMPLE FARM TOOLS
1. It is used for cutting down and clearing bushes and trees.
2. It is used for transplanting seedlings.
3. It is used for planting seeds and harvesting crops.
4. It is used for weeding farmlands.
5. It is used for lifting soil and completely turning it over.
6. It is used for levelling soil.
7. It is used for digging holes during transplanting.
8. It is used for mixing cement/concrete for farm structures.
9. It is used for mixing small quantity of soil or manure.
10. It is used for working manure into the soil, etc.
GENERAL MAINTENANCE OF SIMPLE FARM TOOLS
The following maintenance practices or precautions are to be adopted to prolong the “life span” and effective use of farm tools.
1. Use farm tools for the purpose which they are made for.
2. Store in a cool dry and safe place.
3. Tools should be washed or cleaned after use.
4. Rub oil on metal ends to avoid rusting.
5. Sharpening blunt edges.
6. Repair or replace all broken or damaged parts.
7. Keep records of the movement of farm tools.
8. Do not allow children to play with tools.
9. Do not leave tools with sharp parts carelessly around.
