2. state the basic consideration of local architecture.

3. identify area where local architecture materials could be found in their locality.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

LESSON ONE – INTRODUCTION (FORMS OF LOCAL ARCHITECTURE)

Nigerian Local Architecture are different types of houses (buildings) built and designed based Nigerian cultures or traditions using available local materials.

 

 

THE PURPOSE OF LOCAL ARCHITECTURE

There are different kinds of buildings in Nigeria, designed and built for different purposes. For example,

1. Residential buildings – for personal or for rent.

2. Storage buildings – for storing agricultural products and other goods.

3. Domestic and wild animal buildings – for keeping and rearing of animals.

4. Religious building – for Church, Mosque and shrine.

5. Educational buildings – fort teaching and learning, e.g. schools.

6. Market building – for keeping and selling goods.

7. Office buildings – for private and government activities.

8. Armed force buildings – for people in arms forces.

9. Palace buildings – for Kings and Queens.

10. Industry buildings – for production of goods and services.

 

LESSON TWO – THE BASIC CONSIDERATION IN LOCAL ARCHITECTURE 

There are a number of factors to be considered before setting up a local architecture – house. These are:

1. Available spaces

2. Proper ventilation

3. Nature of building materials

4. Availability of building materials

5. Cost of building materials

6. Approval

7. The builders (workers)

 

AREAS WHERE LOCAL MATERIALS COULD BE FOUND

1. In the forest – stick, bamboo, grass, palm frond, etc.

2. At home – sand, mud, stone and water.

3. Open field – sand, mud and stone.

4. River Bank – sand, stone and shell for decoration.

 

REVISION AND WEEK 12 ASSESSMENT (TEST) 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Explains the purpose of local architecture.

Pupil’s Activities – Listen to the teacher’s explanation of the purpose of local architecture.

3. Explains the basic consideration in local architecture.

Pupil’s Activities – List the basic consideration in local architecture.

4. Areas where local architecture materials could be found.

Pupil’s Activities – Mention the areas where local architecture materials could be found. Suggest purpose of local architecture and best materials used in local architecture.

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
