PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of swimming.

2. differentiate between swimming and swimming stroke.

3. state basic swimming strokes.

4. List the safety rules for swimming.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils can explain the meaning of swimming.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Swimming is a popular exercise and sport that involves movement through or in water.

A swimming stroke is a method of swimming that propel the body forward by moving the arms and legs.

 

BASIC SWIMMING STROKES

The most common swimming strokes or styles,

1. The freestyle stroke

2. The breaststroke

3. The backstroke

4. The butterfly stroke.

 

1. FREE STYLES (FRONT CRAWL) 

Freestyle is fast and efficient.

It is the fastest swimming stroke and mostly used and in the swimming leg of triathlons.

 

 

 

LESSON 2 – SWIMMING STROKES

2. BREAST STROKE 

Most experienced swimmers however submerge their head during the stroke cycle to improve efficiency.

Breaststroke is the slowest of the competitive strokes.

 

 

3. BACKSTROKE SWIMMING  

Backstroke is swum on the back. It is faster than breaststroke but slower than butterfly.

Backstroke is faster than breaststroke but slower than butterfly.

Physicians often prescribe backstroke swimming to people experiencing back problems because it gives the back an excellent workout.

 

 

4. BUTTERFLY SWIMMING STROKES 

Butterfly is the second fastest swim stroke after freestyle.

It has a reputation of being hard to learn and is quickly exhausting. But once you have mastered it, swimming a few lengths of butterfly can be a lot of fun!

 

 

 

LESSON 3 – SAFETY RULES FOR SWIMMING 

Safety rules for swimming are as follows:

1. Stay alert – and stay alive.

2. Do not swim immediately after a meal.

3..Do not eat or chew near the swimming pool.

4. Ensure the presence of a lifeguard before going into the swimming pool.

5. Warm up before swimming, that is, do light stretches.

6. Do not enter the pool unless you are asked to do so.

7. Shower first before entering the pool.

8. Stay in the depth that is your height until you have learnt to swim.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher asks pupils to differentiate between bathing and swimming.

Pupil’s Activities – Differentiate between bathing and swimming.

4. Teacher uses the pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.

5. Teacher leads a discussion on the meaning of Swimming and swimming stroke.

Pupil’s Activities – Explain the meaning of swimming.

6. Teacher displays chart showing different types of swimming strokes.

7. Teacher asks groups or pairs to examine the chart and describe the difference.

8. Teacher uses the chart and the pupil’s responses to discuss and demonstrate swimming strokes.

Pupil’s Activities – Examine the chart and participate actively in the class discussion.

9. Teacher takes pupils for an excursion to the nearest swimming pool design for children. It is optional for safety.

Pupil’s Activities – Optional.

10. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to the lesson evaluation and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson (communicable diseases).
