LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of plants.

2. classify plants based on life span.

3.  state the uses of plants.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can state the characteristics of plants.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of sample or chart showing different plants.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Plants are living things that grow in the soil.

The basic parts of most land plants are roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds.

Plants include grass, trees, flowers, bushes, etc.

 

CLASSES OF PLANTS BASED ON LIFE SPAN 

Plants can be classified based on their life span,

 

1. Annuals

2. Biennials

3. Perennials

 

1. ANNUAL PLANTS 

Annual plants are plants that grow and live for about a year.

Annuals plants are crops like maize, water melon, etc. and weeds, wildflowers, garden flowers, and vegetables.

 

2. BIENNIAL PLANTS 

Biennial plants are plants that grow and live for about two years.

During the first first year, they produce roots, stems, and leaves while in their second year, they produce flowers, fruits, and seeds, and then finally die.

Sugar beets and carrots are examples of biennials.

 

3. PERENNIALS PLANTS 

Perennial plants are plants that grow and live for more two years.

Trees and shrubs are good examples of perennial plants.

 

LESSON 2 – USES OF PLANTS 

The uses of plants are as follows:

1. Plants are used as food for human and animals.

2. Plants are source of oxygen.

3. Plants are used for making papers and stationary.

4. Plants are used for making cloth.

5. Plants are used for treating and curing sickness and diseases.

6. Plants are used for building houses.

7. Plants are used for beautification.

8. Plants are used for making cosmetic (cream).

9. Plants are used for controlling erosion.

10. Plants are used for building boats.

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT 

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

 

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher asks the groups or pairs to state the life span (the period of time between the birth and death of an organism) of any plants.

Pupil’s Activities – State the classes of plants based on their life span.

4. Teacher uses the responses to introduce the lesson and discuss the classes or plants based on life span.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.

5. Teacher displays some of the products of plants.

6. Teacher asks pupils to state the materials used for making these products.

Pupil’s Activities – Examine and identify the source of the materials used for making the products.

7. Teacher uses the reasons responses to lead a discuss the use of plants.

Pupil’s Activities – Analyze the important use of plants in their communities.

8. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board with appropriate evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson and write as instructed.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
