PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of local musical instruments.

2. give examples of local musical instruments in Nigeria.

3. state and demonstrate the methods of sound production.

4. discuss the classification of local instruments.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils can differentiate local musical instruments from foreign musical instruments.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of charts and pictorial material showing diagrams of some musical instruments, rattles, xylophone, recorders, violin etc.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING 

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 - INTRODUCTION

Musical instruments are devices or tools used to produce sound or make music.

  • Trombone
  • Udu
  • Sekere
  • Kakaki
  • Horn
  • Gong
  • Violin
  • Piano
  • Guitar
  • Trumpet, etc.

 

In Nigeria, there are two (2) types of musical instruments used for producing sound and making music,

1. Local Musical Instruments

2. Foreign Musical Instruments

 

LOCAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Local musical instruments are musical devices that produce sound by shaking hitting, rubbing, blowing, beating or plucking.

 

METHOD OF PLAYING OF LOCAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS 

Sound is anything that can be heard by people and animals.

Local musical instruments are source of sound played by,

1. Shaking – Shekere

2. Hitting – Agogo, gangan,

3. Blowing – Opi, oja, horn, kakaki, etc.

4. Beating – Banjo, tabla baya, bata drum (beating and hitting), khanajira, djemba and udu commonly known as pot.

 

 

LESSON 2 - CLASSIFICATION OF LOCAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS 

Local musical instruments in Nigeria can be classified as follows:

1. Aerophonic

2. Chordophonic

3. Idophonic

4. Menbranophonic

 

1. AEROPHONIC

Aerophonic musical instruments are class of wind instrument that produce sound by mass air vibration.

It is played by blowing air into the instrument through mouth.

Examples of Aerophonic instruments are,

  • Opi
  • Oja
  • Horn
  • Kakaki, etc.

 

2. CHORDOPHONIC

Chordophonic musical instruments are class of string that produce sound by plucking, bowing, or striking stretched strings.

Examples of Chordophonic instruments are,

  • Goji
  • Garaya
  • Une
  • Kutigi
  • Molo
  • Kaburu, etc.

 

3. IDOPHONIC

Idophonic musical instruments are class of of raffle instrument that produce sound by shaking, hitting or striking, etc.

Examples of Idophonic Instruments are,

  • Udu
  • Gong
  • Ekwe
  • Sekere
  • Xylophone
  • Split wooden, etc.

 

4. MENBRANOPHONIC 

Menbranophoic musical instruments are the class of drum and kazoo that produce sound by a vibrating stretched membrane.

Sound is produced by striking.

Examples of Menbranophonic Instruments are all types of drum.

 

 

LESSON 3 - USES OF LOCAL MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

USES OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS 

The uses of musical instruments are as follows:

1. It is used for communication or pass information.

2. It is used for healing.

3. It is used for entrainment.

4. It is used for ritual or spiritual rite.

5. It is used for expressing feelings and emotions.

6. It used as a call for service.

 

REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST) 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays sample or chart showing musical instruments.

4. Teacher lets the groups or pairs identify and state their uses.

5. Teacher uses the chart and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson and guides them group the instruments into local and foreign musical instruments.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson instructions to understand the concept of the lesson.

6. Teacher leads a discussion on the meaning of local musical instruments with appropriate examples.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the discussion on the meaning of local musical instruments.

7. Teacher asks pupils to demonstrate how to play each of the local musical instrument.

8. Teacher uses the pupil’s activity 7 to lead a discuss how each of the local instrument is played with appropriate examples.

Pupil’s Activities – Discuss and demonstrate how local musical instruments are played.

9. Teacher lists and explains the classification of local musical instruments.

Pupil’s Activities – List and explain the classification of local musical instruments.

10. Teacher asks pupils to state the uses of local musical instruments.

Pupil’s Activities – Analyze the uses of local musical instruments.

11. Teacher organizes an excursion to the nearest musical centre where pupils can practice how to play local musical instruments.

12. Teacher summarizes the lessons on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION
  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
