PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain seam and mention types of seam.

2. describe the steps for making run and fell, and French seams.

4. produce an album showing stages of making run and fell, and French seams.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can make plain and open seam.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Different garments showing different seams.

2. Charts showing stages of seam making.

3. Albums showing samples of stages of seam making.

4. Brown paper, coloured threads, scissors, needles, pins, etc.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Seam is a line where pieces of fabric and other materials are sewn together in a garment.

For example, sewing shoulders, sides, sleeves, waistline, collar, etc. together.

There are types of seam – plain and open seam, run and fell seam and french seam.

Plain and open seam is a flat seam showing no stitches on the right side. 

 

 

MEANING OF RUN AND FELL SEAM

Run and fell is a strong seam.

It is common on hard fabric like jean materials, etc.

Run and fell seam is flat and the easiest seam among the different types of seam to wash and iron.

METHODS OF MAKING RUN AND FELL SEAM

1. Cut the material and place together with the right and side facing matching balance marks.

2. Machine stitch along fitting line.

3. Remove task and press.

4. Tread seam allowances of one edge longer than the other.

5. Fold the longer edge over the lesser edge, press fold edge after tacking.

6. Hem neatly either by hand or machine.

7. Remove task and press.

8. Display of simple run and fell articles on brown paper.

 

 

LESSON 2 – MEANING OF FRENCH SEAM

French seam is a strong and self neaten seam.

It is common on ladies wears.

Just like run and fell, it is easy to wash and iron well.

It is used on fine fabrics only.

METHODS OF MAKING FRENCH SEAM 

1. Cut the material and place wrong side together.

2. Pick and tack through fitting line.

3. Machine stitch outside the fitting line.

4. Press turning open and trim the raw edges.

5. Turn the seam to the right side of the materials facing each other.

6. Push the seam up with thumb and fore fingers of both hands and stitch.

7. Remove tacking, press stitches and press seam.

8. Display of simple French seam articles on brown paper.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Displays clothes with run and fell seam and french seam such as Jean (run and fell) and lady’s wear.

3. Lets pupils examine the two seams in groups or pairs.

4. Asks pupils to differentiate between the two seams.

Pupil’s Activities – Examine and identify the different between the two seams.

5. Uses the clothes and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.
