TOPIC: Writing and Responding to Letters of Congratulations and Sympathy
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:
- write a letter of congratulations using the appropriate style or dictions and
- use the correct register (words) of this area.
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
- Course book.
- Suitable materials from other sources e.g. newspapers.
METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
Expressing congratulations and sympathy through controlled writing:
- Congratulations on occasions of success, birthday, birth of a baby, wedding, promotion, etc.
- Sympathy on bereavement, loss of valuable goods, etc.

LETTER OF SYMPATHY
Dear Mrs. Paul,
I was deeply saddened to hear about the recent loss of your mother. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy for your loss during this difficult time of grief.
I never had the chance to meet your mother in person, but through working with you for the past 10 years, I’ve witnessed first – hand what an incredibly close relationship you two shared. I can’t imagine how difficult this is for you.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you during this difficult time. I value you as a client and offer my deepest sympathies for your loss. I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

- To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
- To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
- Discusses occasions which call for congratulations and sympathy with the pupils contributing.
- Pupil’s Activities – Identify occasions that call for congratulations/sympathy.
- Guides pupils to acquire the appropriate style for expressing congratulations and sympathy.
- Pupil’s Activities – Identify suitable language for expressing congratulations, or expressing sympathy with the teacher guiding them.
- Reads the passages dealing with the subjects.
- Pupil’s Activities – Read sample congratulatory or sympathy messages provided by the teacher.
- Pupil’s Activities – Draft messages of their own, these could be formal or informal depending on the relationship between the sender and the recipient (addressee).
- Gives pupils exercises to do while supervising their works.
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
- contribute to the class discussion on writing sympathy letter or a congratulatory letter.
