TOPIC – Expressing Wishes and Supposition 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

1. Express wishes with structures correctly.

2. Explain the meaning of each utterance, e.g. ‘I wish we were in Ibadan’ (use correctly the expression such as, ‘I wish we were in Ibadan’.

3. Make sentences with new construction.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

• What is wished is expressed in the subordinate/clause and the verb is the past, e.g.

‘I wish I were in Ibadan. I wish I had money’.

 

• What is supposed is expressed  using ‘were’ in the present, with ‘if clause, e.g.

‘if I were rich, I would give every beggar on the street some money’.

POEM 

If all the trees were one tree,

What a big tree that would be.

If all the axes were one axe,

What a big axe that would be.

If all the seas were one sea,

What a big sea that would be.

If all the men were one man,

What a big man he would be.

And if I, the big man,

Took the big axe,

And cut down the big tree,

And let it fall into the big sea.

What a big splash would be.

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Uses the following poem to illustrate the lesson;

Pupil’s Activities – Engage in short dialogues or conversations to bring out the meaning of each expression – (A) I wish I were a bird. (B) what would you do? (B) I would fly to many towns without paying any bus fares.

3. Lets them discuss the poem;

Pupil’s Activities – Participate active in poem dissertation.

4. Then, uses the structure of the poem to teach the concept of how to express wishes and supposition;

Pupil’s Activities – Make sentences using – ‘if I were… I would… e.g. If I were a magician, I would detect robbers and hand them over to police.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
