TOPIC – INTRODUCTION TO AREA

LEARNING AREA

1. Introduction

2. Area of Squares and Rectangles by Counting

3. Area of Squares and Rectangles by Counting in cm²

4. Area of Squares and Rectangles Using Formula in cm²

5. Lesson Evaluation and Weekly Assessment (Test)

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. find the area of rectangles and squares by counting the number of squares they cover.

2. find the area of rectangles and squares by counting the number of square centimetres.

3. find the area of rectangles and squares, using the formula.

RATIONALE

Area is the size of a surface. The most common surfaces within and around us are either square or rectangular surfaces. Objects with either of these surfaces occupied certain portion of available space.

The concept of area of squares and rectangles are very important in arrangements and allocation of space. For example, the size of school building and classroom.

This lesson will enable the pupils to recognize and appreciate the importance of areas.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can count number of objects in a container.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Square and Rectangular shapes

2. Writing materials

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

LESSON 2 – AREA OF SQUARE AND RECTANGLE

ACTIVITY 1 – INTRODUCTION TO AREA OF SHAPES

Area is the space occupied by plane shapes.

Area is determined by numbers of squares covers or calculation.

ACTIVITY 2 – AREA OF SQUARES AND RECTANGLES BY COUNTING THE NUMBER OF SQUARES

Woking Examples

Teacher guides pupils to identify each shape and to find the areas of the following shapes by counting the numbers of squares covers, leaving answer in cm.

ACTIVITY 3 – WORKING EXERCISE

LESSON 3 – AREA OF SHAPES BY CALCULATION

ACTIVITY 1 – WORKING EXAMPLE

The shape below has four (4) lengths. Name all the lengths as A, B, C and D with A and D equal to 7 cm each while B and D equal to 4 cm each.

The area of the rectangle is calculated by by multiple 7 cm and 4 cm to give 28 cm².

Area of rectangle is Length x Breadth.

That’s, L x B

Area of square is Length x Length.

That’s, L²

ACTIVITY 2 – WORKING EXERCISE

Find the area of rectangles and squares, using the formula.

LESSON 4 – REVISION

LESSON 5 – WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST)

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher guides pupils to count from 881 – 900 and skip count in 3s, 5s, 6s, 9s and 10s.

Pupil’s Activities – Count from 881 – 900 and skip count in 3s, 5s, 6s, 9s and 10s.

4. Teacher guides pupils to find the pupils to find the area of squares and rectangles by counting and using formula in cm².

Pupil’s Activities – Follow the teacher’s instructions to find the area of squares and rectangles by counting and using formula in cm².

Summarizes the lessons on the board on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly as the questions and write as instructed.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
