PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. define and demonstrate dance as the movement of the body.

2. differentiate between foreign and traditional dances.

3. discuss the importance of music in the school and their society.

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOURS

The pupils can define and demonstrate dance as the movement of the body.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of Musical instruments e.g. Drums, Gong, Pattlers or Shakers, Wooden drums, Clappers, Xylophones, etc; Pictures of dancers performing; DVDs or VCDs Recording of dances.

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Teacher activity – Play a suitable Nigerian music that will make the pupils to dance. Be sure that they are dancing and asks, what are you doing?

 

MEANING OF DANCE 

Dance is the movement of the Body. People dance to the rhythm of the song or the beat of the instruments.

 

TYPES OF DANCE

There are two types of dance –

1. Foreign dance

2. Traditional (Local) dance

 

MEANING AND EXAMPLES OF FOREIGN DANCE

Foreign dance is non Nigerian dance.

Foreign dance requires foreign music or instruments such as Drum set, Electric guitar, Keyboard, Piano, Guitar, Drums, Violin,  Saxophone, Flute, etc. Most of the foreign instruments are used in Nigerian traditional music.

Examples of foreign dance are as follows –

1. Ballet

2. Break Dance

3. Tap Dance

4. Swing

5. Hip-Hop

6. Disco

7. Moon Walk, etc.

 

LESSON 2 – TRADITIONAL DANCE 

Traditional dance is the dance that represent our culture and traditions.

Just like the foreign dance, traditional dance also has its own tradition music and instruments such as Sekere, Agogo, Gangan, Opi, Oja, Horn, Kàkàkí, etc.

Examples of Traditional Dance in Nigeria are as follows –

1. Bata dance

2. Sharo Dance

3. Koroso dance

4. Atilogwu Dance

5. Nkwa Umu Agbogho

6. Ikpirikpi Ogu Dance

7. Gese dance

8. Swange dance

9. Ogene Dance

10. Ekombi dance

 

IMPORTANCE OF DANCE IN THE SCHOOL AND OUR SOCIETY 

Dance is an important part of culture and society. The importance of dance are as follows:

1. It is a form of exercise.

2. It burns calories.

3. It provides physical and mental refreshment.

4. It improves balance.

5. It increases muscular strength.

6. It is a form of entertainment.

7. It improves better coordination, agility and flexibility.

8. It is a profession.

9. It is the best way to express feelings.

10. It has a healing power.

11. It makes the bones stronger and reduced risk of osteoporosis.

12. It improves the condition of your heart and lungs.

13. It manages the body weight.

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST)

As stated in the performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

1. Teacher organizes the pupils into groups depending on the size of the class.

2. Teacher plays sample of different dances or DVD players, if available.

3. Teacher allows the pupils as groups to describe the contents of the chart or the DVD players.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils describe the contents of the chart or the DVD players.

4. Teacher asks the pupils to state why do people dance most especially when they heard music playing.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils state the reasons why people dance.

5. Teacher uses the chart or DVD and the pupil’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson – Meaning and Types of Dance.

6. Teacher guides pupils to define dance as the movement of the body.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils define dance as the movement of the body with basic demonstrations.

7. Teacher uses the chart guides pupils to identify and classify different types of dance with appropriate examples as shown on the chart or watched in the video.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils different between foreign and traditional dances.

8. Teacher leads a class discussion on the importance of dance in our school and the society.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils analyze the importance of dance in our school and the society.

9. Teacher organizes he pupils for group’s competitions.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils demonstrates a specified local dances according to their cultures or languages using the basic movements with musical accompaniment.

10. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils participate actively in the lesson summary by responding correctly to most of the lesson and write as instructed.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
