TOPIC – The Past Tense – The Perceptive Aspect 

 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

use the perceptive aspect of the past tense in sentences.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

Sentence strips

Picture chart to show a sequence of event to be reported on by pupils.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

THE PAST TENSE – THE PERCEPTIVE ASPECT 

1. The past perfect tense expresses an action which look place be words fore another followed.

The two usually connected e.g. I came home after everyone had slept.

 

2. The adverbial in use with the past perfect tense are – ‘before’, ‘after’, ‘by then’, ‘when’, e.g. When I came he had gone (i.e. going took place before I came).

 

3. The past perfect tense occurs in reported speech, e.g.

  • ‘I have swept the floor,’ said the girl.
  • The girl said she had slept the floor.

 

4. The past perfect tense always has the word ‘had’ in its use.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Provides sample sentences to introduce the structure.

Pupil’s Activities – Repeat sample sentences provided by the teacher.

3. Uses a situation to make the meaning clear.

Ensures pupils use the past perfect tense correctly in sentences e.g. The boy washed his plate after he had finished eating. By the time they reached the hospital, the woman had died. The train had departed before I arrived. 

Pupil’s Activities – Make up sentences of their own with – before, after, by then, by the time.

Pupil’s Activities – Make up sentences expressing reported speech, e.g. I have learnt my poem, said the boy.

Pupil’s Activities – Make up negative sentences using the same structure, e.g. I had not travelled two miles when I met my friend.

4. Ensures pupils make each sentence correctly.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

Pupils to –

use the simple present, simple past and past perfect tense in sentences.
