PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. describe concept of martial arts.

2. list the types of martial arts.

3. explain the meaning of Judo.

4. state briefly history and development of Judo in Nigeria;

5. mention the importance of Judo.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOURS 

The pupils can demonstrate martial arts.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of Mats, Sports Wears, Gongs, Stop watches and Chart showing marital arts – Judo. 

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Martial art are the sports that originated in Japan, Korea, and China as forms of self defence or attack.

They are fighting skills used for self defence or attack without any weapons.

Examples of martial arts are as follows:

  • Judo
  • Karate
  • Kendo
  • Kung Fu
  • Taekwondo

 

JUDO SPORT 

Judo is a Universal Olympic sports and a method of physical, intellectual and moral education.

It was founded in Nigeria when the interest of the game started increasing in the country to foster appropriate support for all the youths of the country that have declared interest for the game.

 

HISTORY OF JUDO 

Judo is a martial art that was born in Japan, and it is now known around the world as an Olympic sport.

Judo was created in 1882 by combining jujutsu, a form of close combat, with elements of mental discipline.

It became an Olympic event in 1964.

IOC, International Olympic Committee considered Judo as the most complete sport that improves the quality of life of those who practice it.

 

 

LESSON 2 – HISTORY OF JUDO IN NIGERIA 

Judo was embraced by Nigerians in 1972.

Mr Alexander Ifidon was appointed in 1973 to oversee the development of Judo in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Amateur Judo Association was formed in 1973.

It was later changed to Nigeria Judo Federation in 1993.

Judo was first introduced to the Nigerian armed forces and later introduced to clubs, colleges and universities.

 

IMPORTANCE OF JUDO 

The importance of Judo are as follows:

1. It helps in building self defence skills.

2. It helps in mental and physical development.

3. It builds stamina and body structure.

4. It gives (promotes) courage and self confidence.

5. It helps in the training of armed forces and security personnel.

6. It assists in body flexibility and mobility.

7. It promotes discipline.

8. It promotes general fitness of the body.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups or pair depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays chart showing Judo fight.

4. Teacher lets pupils as a group or pair identify and describe the content of the chart as a fighting sport.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify Judo as a fighting sport.

5. Teacher uses the chart and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.

6. Teacher leads a discussion on martial arts and explain and history of Judo in Nigeria.

Pupil’s Activities – Narrate the history of Judo in Nigeria.

7. Teacher discuss the importance of Judo.

Pupil’s Activities – Analyze the importance of Judo for self defence.

8. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board with appropriate evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
