LEARNING OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of plants.

2. identify and classify plants.

3.  describe the characteristics of plants.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify and describe the plants as living things.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of sample or chart showing different plants.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Plants are living things that grow in the soil.

The basic parts of most land plants are roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds.

Plants include grass, trees, flowers, bushes, etc.

 

CHARACTERISTICS OF PLANTS

The characteristics of plants are as follows:

 

1. Plants make their own food, (photosynthesis).

2. Plants are rooted in one place.

3. Plants reproduce themselves, (sexually or asexually).

4. Plants grow and die.

5. Plants supports life.

 

 

LESSON 2 – CLASSES OF PLANTS 

Plants can be classified into vascular and non-vascular plants.

 

VASCULAR PLANTS 

Vascular plants are plants that have specialized tissues to move water and nutrients throughout the plant.

For example – ferns, gymnosperms, and flowering plants.

Vascular plants have stems, leaves, and roots.

 

NON VASCULAR PLANTS 

Non vascular plants are plants that have simpler tissues to move water and nutrients throughout the plant.

 

For example – mosses, liverworts, and hornworts.

Non vascular plants have no roots, stems, or leaves.

 

LESSON 3 – REVISION AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT 

As stated in performance objectives or lesson evaluation. 

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays sample of different plants such as grass, crops and tree.

4. Teacher lets pupils as groups or pairs to examine and differentiate between the plants.

Pupil’s Activities – Differentiate between grass, crop and tree.

5. Teacher uses pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson.

Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.

 

6. Teacher leads a discussion on the meaning and characteristics of plants.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and discuss the meaning and characteristics of plants.

7. Teacher asks pupils to identify between plants and animals.

Pupil’s Activities – Analyze the difference between plants and animals.

8. Teacher uses the samples of vascular and non vascular plants to explain the classes of plants.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and differentiate between vascular and non vascular plants.

9. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board with appropriate evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
