LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. explain the meaning of water projects.

2. identify and understand the various water projects in Nigeria.

3. identify water projects in their locality.

3. state the benefits and hazard of water projects.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The pupils can identify water projects in their communities and their benefits.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

 

1. Map of Nigeria showing water projects.

2. Charts of simple water projects in our community – borehole and well.

3. Charts of various water project in Nigeria.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Water is very important for survival.

It is the main component of plant and animal bodies.

Water also serves useful purposes in the life of man.

Many governments initiate and develop water projects because of their usefulness in improving life and contribute to commerce and industry.

 

MEANING OF WATER PROJECT

Water project is process of making an area of water more useful.

 

EXAMPLES OF WATER PROJECTS 

Examples of such water projects in Nigeria are –

1. Water bodies used for transportation

  • Canals, rivers, seas and oceans are used for transportation.

 

2. Water bodies used for commerce and industry

  • These water bodies are used for importation and exportation of goods. Lakes are used for tourist industry.

 

3. Dams

  • These are used for production of energy, electricity and farming (irrigation).

 

4. Water Station

  • These are state water projects used at home and in industries. For example, Lagos State Water Cooperation.

 

 

LESSON 2 – WATER PROJECTS IN DIFFERENT PARTS OF NIGERIA 

There are water projects in different parts of Nigeria,

1. Lakes

2. Dams

3. Ports

4. Canal

 

1. LAKE

A lake is a large body of water surrounded by land.

Examples of lake in Nigeria are Bagaudu lake and Kainji lake

 

2. DAM

A dam is structure built to reduce or redirect the flow of water.

Examples of dam in Nigeria are as follows:

  • Kainji dam in kwara state
  • Shiroro dam in Niger state
  • Ero dam in Ekiti
  • Oji dam in Enugu state
  • Tiga dam in Niger state

 

3. PORTS

A port is a secure place ships load or offload cargo.

Nigerian Ports Authority is a federal government agency that governs and operates the ports of Nigeria.

Examples of port in Nigeria are as follows:

  • Apapa and Tin Can in Lagos
  • Onne and Port-Harcourt ports in Rivers State
  • Warri Port
  • Calabar Port

 

4. CANAL

Canal is an artificial water project that is built to connect two natural bodies of water.

For example, Hadejia canal in Kano

 

5. STATE WATER PROJECTS 

State water projects are the efforts of the states to provide clean and safer water for domestic, industrial and other use.

For example – Lagos State Water Corporation

Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class and guides them to identify the location of water project in Nigeria.

 

 

LESSON 3 – BENEFITS AND HAZARD OF WATER PROJECTS  

BENEFITS OF WATER PROJECTS

The benefits of water projects in Nigeria are as follows:

1. To improve the quality of water supply.

2. To provide clean water for drinking, domestic and industrial use.

3. To increase local and international trades.

4. To generate electricity.

5. To increase agricultural products.

6. To secure place for boats and ships.

 

HAZARD OF WATER PROJECTS 

The hazard of water projects are as follows:

1. Flooding

2. Strong ocean current

3. Poor weather condition

4 Over flow of water

5. Ice rock below or above the water

6. Inadequate expert

7. Fault ship

8. Poor equipment

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher asks pupils as a group or pair to state 5 source of water in their communities.

4. Teacher leads a discussion on the main source of water mentioned by the groups or pairs.

Pupil’s Activities – State the main source of water in their communities.

5. Teacher uses pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson and explain the meaning of water project and state types of water project in Nigeria.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson and to make a positive contribution.

 

6. Teacher displays chart showing water projects in Nigeria and guides the groups or pairs to some of the water projects in state and Nigeria.

Pupil’s Activities – Locate some of the water projects in Nigeria.

7. Teacher displays chart showing some of the benefits and hazards of water projects.

8. Teacher lets pupils identify and discuss the benefits and hazards water projects.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and discuss the benefits and hazards water projects.

9. Teacher leads a discussion on the benefits a d hazard of water projects with appropriate examples.

Pupil’s Activities – Analyze the benefits and hazard of water projects in their communities.

10. Teacher organizes visit to the nearest water project with the school communities.

Pupil’s Activities – Active participation in the excursion.

11. Teacher summarizes the lessons on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to the questions and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
