PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:

1. explain the meaning of food processing.

2. mention 5 importance of food processing.

3. list 5 agricultural products and their by-products.

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils can identify and differentiate between process and unprocess food.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of agricultural products.

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON 

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Processing makes food more edible, palatable and safe, and preserves it so it can be eaten beyond the harvest season.

Food processing makes agricultural products durable and available at all times.

 

MEANING OF FOOD PROCESSING 

Food processing is the transformation or changing of agricultural crops into finished or semi – finished goods.

For xamples – changing cassava to garri, starch, flower, etc.

 

Note – Make a lot of different illustrations until the pupils get the concept food processing.

 

LESSON 2 – IMPORTANCE OF FOOD PROCESSING 

1. It is for better usage.

2. It removes poisonous agents.

3. It makes food ready to eat directly or indirectly.

4. It improves food quality and market value.

5. It prepares food for storage.

6. It makes available different varieties of food stuffs from the same farm produce.

7. It provides employment opportunities for people.

8. It makes transportation of food processed easier since it required less space.

 

LESSON 3 – 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Displays sample of titus for the pupils to identify and state what is made of.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify and state what is inside of titus.

3. Introduces the lesson and discuss the meaning and importance of food processing.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the class discussion.

4. Asks pupils to mention agricultural products and them to list its by-products.

5. Summary each lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson – food preservation.
