PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –
1. explain the meaning of food.
2. state the reasons for eating food.
3. mention types of food.
4. list different classes of food and their uses
ENTRY BEHAVIOURS
The pupils can identify most of the local food and state some of the reasons for eating food.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:
1. Charts on food groups.
2. Real food items.
3. Charts on food nutrients, sources and functions.
METHOD OF TEACHING
Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION
Foods are solid or liquid substances that gives essential nutrients to the body.
Food nutrients are the essential substances present in the food that help the body to function well.
TYPES OF FOOD/COMMON FOOD IN OUR LOCALITY
1. Solid foods
Example of solid foods are rice, bean, eba, fufu, etc.
2. Liquid foods
Liquid foods are pap, custard, tea, juice, etc.
3. Fruit foods
Fruits are in both solid and liquid forms.
REASONS FOR EATING FOOD
We eat foods for the following reasons,
1. for daily energy.
2. for protection against diseases.
3. for clear vision.
4. for growth.
5. for cleansing.
6. for social activities.
CLASSES OF FOOD NUTRIENTS
There are six (6) main classes of nutrients that the body needs.
- Carbohydrates
- Proteins
- Fats and oils
- Vitamins
- Minerals
- Water
Note – It is important that everyone consumes these six nutrients on a daily basis to help them build their bodies and maintain their health.

Ask pupils to –
1. explain the meaning of food.
2. state 5 reasons for eating food.
3. list 3 types of food with appropriate examples.
4. mention 6 classes of food.
LESSON 2 – CLASSES OF FOOD AND THEIR USES
1. CARBOHYDRATES
Carbohydrates are energy giving food.
The source of carbohydrates are rice, yam, bread, etc.
2. PROTEINS
Proteins are body building food that repair body tissue.
The source of proteins are eggs, milk, bean, etc.
3. VITAMINS
Vitamins are food that help to fight against diseases in the body.
The source of vitamins are fruits like oranges, pawpaw, vegetables, etc.
4. FAT AND OILS
Fats and oils are food that keep the body warm and also give energy to the body.
The source of fats and oils are palm oil, groundnut oil, vegetables oil, oily fish, butter, etc.
5. MINERALS
Minerals also help the body to grow and stay healthy.
The source of minerals are Iodised salt, liver, eggs, etc.
6. WATER
Water is a liquid food that regulate the temperature of the body.
The source of portable and good water are natural sources , fruits juice and other drinks.
LESSON EVALUATION
Ask pupils to list different classes of food and their uses with appropriate examples.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Display sample or chart showing common local food.
Pupil’s Activities – Identify most of the local food.
3. Uses sample or chart to introduce the lesson and lead the pupils to explain the meaning of food and state the reasons for eating food.
Pupil’s Activities – Listen to the lesson introduction to explain the meaning of food and state the reasons for eating food.
4. Asks pupils to different between pap and garri (commonly called eba in Yoruba).
Pupil’s Activities – Different between pap and garri. That’s, pap is liquid while eba is solid.
5. Guides pupils to state the food that is under the food categories – liquid, solid and fruits.
Pupil’s Activities – Give appropriate examples of liquid, solid and fruit food.
6. Provides real food items and chart of the classes of food based on their nutrients.
Pupil’s Activities – Observe the chart on display.
7. Discuss the classes of food and their food.
9. Summarizes each of the lesson on the board.
Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson and write as instructed.
