PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, most of the students should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. define non-communicable diseases.

2. state the nature of the following non-communicable diseases.

ENTRY BEHAVIOUR

The students can identify and describe some of the communicable diseases such as HIV/AIDS, COVID 19, etc.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Introductory Activities – Ask the students to describe the nature of COVID 19 disease. Use the description to introduce Non communicable diseases as diseases that cannot be transmitted to another person.

MEANING/DEFINITION OF NON – COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

Non communicable diseases can be defined as diseases that cannot be spread through such contact, or any other means.

For examples are listed below as –

NATURE OF NON – COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

1. Asthma

Asthma is a non communicable disease that makes it hard to breathe. Asthma is the caused of difficult breathing, chest pain, cough and wheezing.

2. Ache

Ache is non communicable disease are unpleasant pains in different part of one’s body.

3. Cancer

Cancer is a non communicable disease involving abnormal cell growth without stopping and spread to other parts of the body. Cancer diseases are breast, lung, colon, skin, prostate, and ovarian cancer.

4. Hypertension

Hypertension is a non communicable disease. It is another name for high blood pressure. Hypertension is an abnormal raised in blood pressure against the walls of their blood vessels.

It can lead to severe health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and sometimes death.

5. Stroke

Stroke is a non communicable disease can caused the brain cells to die in minutes. This occurs when supply of blood to the brain is stopped. Stroke include inability to walk, speak and understand or move any parts of the body.

LESSON 2 – CONTINUATION

6. Diabetes

Diabetes is a chronic health problem that associated with abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. That’s inability of body to take or break down more sugar contents.

 

7. Obesity

Obesity is a excess amount of fat in the body. This occurs when the body mass index is 30 or more.

This increased the chances heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers.

 

8. Rickets

Rickets is the lack of vitamin D or calcium required for stronger bones. It is the caused of delayed growth, bow legs, weakness and pain in the spine, pelvis and legs.

 

9. Sickle cell

Sickle cell disease is a condition in which red blood cells are not shaped as they should be. Sickle cell anemia (sickle cell disease) is a blood disease that shortens life expectancy.

LESSON 3 – PREVENTIVE MEASURES FOR NON – COMMUNICABLE DISEASES

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the students some questions; then, the teacher –

2. Explains communicable diseases.

Pupil’s Activities – Listen to the teacher’s explanation and explain communicable diseases.

3. Discuss the nature of different non-communicable diseases.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the class discussion.

4. Leads students to suggest preventive measure for each disease.

5. Summarizes the lesson on the board.
