CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Soil is formed of fine rock particles mixed with air, water and particles from dead plant and animal matter.

The soil is loose materials while the rock is solid materials.

MEANING OF ROCK

Rock are solid parts of the earth that made up of different materials or minerals.

When the rock is broken into smaller particle, it formed soil.

WHERE CAN ROCK BE FOUND?

1. By the road sides.

2. By the bank of rivers and streams.

3. By the beach.

4. On the construction site.

5. Gravel pit, mines and quarries.

LESSON 2 – TYPES OF ROCKS

There are three main types of rock, based on the way the rock was formed:

1. Igneous rocks – granite

2. Sedimentary rocks – limestone and sandstone

3. Metamorphic rocks – marble

IGNEOUS ROCKS

Igneous rock is the rock formed when the hot molten material is push out to cool and become solid or hard.

Igneous rock means fire formed by cooling and harden magma or lava.

Magma is the molten Material inside earth while lava is the molten material that’s put out to the surface of earth.

When the lava cools slowly, the type of igneous rock formed is called basalt because it is free of crystalline.

But when is cool faster, granite is formed because of the present of crystalline.

Examples of igneous rock are basalt and granite.

SEDIMENTARY ROCKS

Sedimentary rock is the rock formed by the collection of minerals like stones, pebbles, sand and silt at the surface of the earth.

The formation of sedimentary rock may contain fossils.

Fossils are the plants and animals decay for many years on the surface of the earth.

Limestone, sandstone and shale are good examples of sedimentary rock.

METAMORPHIC ROCKS

Metamorphic rock is the rock formed when the existing rock changed by extreme heat and pressure within the deep of the earth surface.

Slate and marble are good examples of metaphoric rock.

LESSON 3 – USES OF ROCK AND LANDMARK OF ROCK IN NIGERIA

USES OF ROCK

Rocks are valuable minerals that can be used for,

1. producing cement, glass and marble.

2. gold and silver jewellery.

3. making chalk and paper.

4. building a house.

5. construction of road and bridge.

6. making iron and steel.

7. producing insecticide.

8. manufacturing petrochemicals, etc.

THE MAJOR LANDMARK OF ROCKS IN NIGERIA

Landmark rocks are areas covered by rocks.

Areas covered by rocks in Nigeria are as follows:

1. Zuma rock in Niger State

2. Olumo rock in Abeokuta

3. Aso rock in Abuja. It is also known as Villa Rock

4. Riyom rock in Plateau State

5. Wade rock in Plateau State

AN EXCURSION

Teacher organizes an excursion to any of the closest landmark rocks in Nigeria, it it approved by the school authority and any other agencies.

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays samples soils and rocks.

4. Teachers lets pupils identify and differentiate between soil and rock.

5. Teacher listen to the pupils and uses the samples to introduce the lesson.

6. Teacher asks pupils to identify the difference and state where rock can be found.

7. Teacher uses the rocks and pupil’s responses to lead a discussion on the meaning and types of rock with appropriate examples.

8. Teacher displays chart showing different materials or products made from rocks. For examples – chalk, building materials, marble, jewellery, etc.

9. Teacher lets pupils identify and state the uses of materials or products.

10. Teacher tells pupils, all the materials or products are made from rocks.

11. Teacher guides pupils as a group or pair to identify and state the uses of rocks.

Pupil’s Activities – State and analyze the uses of rock in their communities.

12. Teacher displays different ₦aira notes and asks pupils,

  • which of the notes has a rock?
  • what is the name of the rock?
  • compare the rock with the ones you found along the road size or at the construction site.

13. Teacher uses the ₦100 note to introduce and leads a discussion on the major landmark of rock in Nigeria using appropriate charts.

14. Teacher organizes an excursion to any of the landmark of rock closer to them.

15. Teacher summarizes the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to the questions and write as instructed.

CONCLUSION

  • To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
  • Next Lesson –

LESSON EVALUATION

Teacher asks pupils to:
