By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and be able to:

1. explain culture and cultural preservation.

2. mention aspects of our culture to be preserved.

3. mention aspects of our culture to be discarded.

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOR

The pupils can identify cultural differences and similarities.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Pictures of dressing from different cultural areas.

 

2. Pictures showing different ways of greetings, eating, etc.

3. Real cultural materials and objects.

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION – OUR CULTURE

Culture is the way of life of a people. Our cultures are different because our histories, location and external influence.

It includes the language we speak, food we eat, clothes we wear, etc.

 

MEANING OF CULTURE

Culture is the way of life of a group of people.

 

Culture, therefore, includes the totality of the people’s beliefs, modes of worship, works of art and craft, language, type of food, way of dressing, dancing, festivals, technology, ways of thinking and marriage practices.

 

CULTURAL PRESERVATION 

Cultural preservation is a way of maintaining the existing cultural heritage for the present and future generations.

 

LESSON 2 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES 

Teacher’s/Pupil’s Activities – Discuss and write on the board, how we can preserve our culture and remove all harmful elements.

 

WAYS OF PRESERVING AND MAINTAINING OUR CULTURE 

It is important for us to promote and preserve certain aspects of our old customs and traditions.

Some of these are –

1. The practice of living together in a community.

2. Respect for elders and those in an authority.

 

3. Hard working

4. Traditional religion

5. Indigenous foods

6. Traditional language

7. Chieftaincy titles

8. The museum

 

PART OF OUR CULTURE TO BE DISCARDED

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Discusses with the pupils, ways of preserving our culture.
