TOPIC: MAKING SPEECH IN FORMAL OCCASION 

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. use the appropriate format in making speech on different occasions.

2. speak in public using appropriate registers for different occasions.

3. write a speech for a specific occasion treated.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Models  of formal speeches from magazines  books, or newspapers.

2. Course book

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

TYPES OF SPEECH PUPILS MAY BE TAUGHT

1. Introducing the chairman of an occasion.

2. Introducing the guest of honour.

3. Chairman’s speech.

4. Special guest’s speech.

5. Vote of thanks

6. Proposing the toast of the guest of honour.

7. Response to a speech.

Note – Pupils should be taught the correct registers for each of the above. 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Pastes samples of speeches on the walls round the class. Lets the pupils go round and read the samples.

Pupil’s Activities – Improvise various occasions; e.g birthday party, school party, head boy’s speech.

3. Discusses the samples with the pupils pupils. Guides the pupils to still correct speech habits.

Pupil’s Activities – Discuss the appropriate registers for each.

4. Aims at giving pupils maximum time to practice speaking. Gets the them to make speeches.

Pupil’s Activities – Make a speech for each occasion and deliver it.

5. Devises the situation which will make the lesson orderly and interesting e.g. limit individual speaking to five minutes.

Pupil’s Activities – Do class dramatization of various occasions. Practice speaking with correct pronunciation, stress, intonation and rhythm.

6. Gets pupils to write out their own speech on the topic given.

Pupil’s Activities – Write a speech for each occasion and deliver it.

CONCLUSION

• To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

LESSON EVALUATION

Pupils to:

1. make formal speeches.

2. use appropriate format and register for formal speeches.
