PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES 

By the end of the lesson, the students should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –

1. identify Nigeria’s national symbols and their meanings.

2. describe the unifying measures included in the Nigerian national anthem and pledge.

3. describe the measures adopted by government to promote unity among Nigerians.

4. discuss parts of the Nigerian constitution that seek to promote national consciousness and national unity.

5. discuss how individuals and groups can promote national unity.

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. A chart showing all Nigerian national symbols

2. National flag

3. Specimen of Nigerian currency

4. Nigerian constitution

5. Posters and documentaries

6. Cartoons and films.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

NATIONAL SYMBOLS 

Our National Symbols are things that represent our great Nation – Nigeria. These symbols represent something important in our country.

Our National symbols are our National Identity through which we can easily identify as Nigerian and matters that has to do with Nigeria.

 

NIGERIA NATIONAL FLAG 

 

 

  • The GREEN stand for the rich and fertility agricultural soil.
  • The WHITE stands for peace and unity.

 

 

NIGERIA COAT OF ARMS

 

 

  • The Coat of Arms stands for absolute power and authority.
  • The BLACK SHIELD stands for the good soil of our Nation.
  • The TWO HORSES stand for our dignity and pride.
  • The mark “Y” stands for the two rivers in our country – River Niger (major) and River Benue (minor).
  • The EAGLE stands for the strength of our country.
  • The FLOWERS stand for the beauty our country.

 

OTHER SYMBOLS 

The Nigerian Constitution – This is the book that contains the laws of our country.

National Anthem – This is our special song. It is divided into standard 1 and 2.

National Pledge – This is the promise we make to love serve and protect our country.

 

National Currency – This is the money we spend in our country.

 

 

The Nigerian Passport – This document proves that we are Nigerians when we travel around the world.

 

 

 

PURPOSE OF ESTABLISHMENT OF NATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

NYSC

The NYSC scheme was created in a bid to reconstruct, reconcile and rebuild the country after the Nigerian Civil war.

 

UNITY SCHOOLS

Unity Schools was established with the primary aim of integrating and grooming leaders, for the future of both the public and private sectors of Nigeria, who would bear the responsibility and build the mindset of fostering National Unity.

 

FEDERAL CHARACTER

The Federal Character was established to implement and enforce the Federal Character Principle of fairness and equity in the distribution of public posts and socio-economic infrastructures among the various federating units of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

 

WAYS OF PROMOTING NATIONAL UNITY 

1. True Practice of Federal Character.

2. Zoning of Leadership positions.

3. Judicious Use of Natural Resources.

4. States Autonomy over Natural Resources.

5. Sports Activities.

6. Cultural Integration.

7. Duration of Youth Service.

8. Promoting Inter-Tribal Marriages.

9. Tolerating one another.

10. Avoid discrimination.

11. Showing love and concern.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the students some questions;

2. Brings pictures and charts to the classroom.

Student’s Activities – Identify and describe national symbols.

3. Guides the students to describe the features of describe the features of national symbols and their meanings.

Student’s Activities – Explain the meanings of the symbols.

4. Analyses the national anthem and pledge and identifies unifying national goals.

Student’s Activities – Identify and describe national symbols.

5. Discusses measures and institution that fosters national unity among Nigerians.

6. Guides the students in identifying ways of promoting national unity.

Student’s Activities – Lead the discussion on how they can promote national unity.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
