By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. identify and list means of transportation used on water, and the places where they are used;

2. list problems of water transportation in Nigeria;

3. list problems of air transportation in Nigeria;

2. explain how these problems can be solved.

 

 

ENTRY BEHAVIOURS

The pupils can identify and state means of water and air transportations.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Pictures of some means of water/air transportation

2. Maps showing airports and air routes, river – ports and seaports.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION

Transportation is the movement of people and goods from one place to another by land, water or air.

 

MEANS OF WATER TRANSPORTATION? 

Water transportation is the movement of people and goods from one place to another by water.

 

MEANS OF WATER TRANSPORTATION

The means of water transportation in Nigeria are as follows:

1. Canoes

2. Boats

3. Ferries

4. Ships

 

PROBLEMS OF WATER TRANSPORTATION? 

1. Few seaports and ships

2. Sea weeds

3. Bad weather

4. Poor maintenance

5. Old equipment

 

 

LESSON 2 – AIR TRANSPORTATION

Air transportation is the movement of people and goods from one place to another by air.

 

MEANS OF AIR TRANSPORTATION

The means of air transportation in Nigeria are as follows:

1. Aeroplanes

2. Helicopters

3. Jets

 

PROBLEMS OF AIR TRANSPORTATION

The problems of air transportations are as follows:

1. Few planes

2. Few skilled pilots

3. Few airports

4. High maintenance cost

5. High fares

6. Climate effects

 

 

LESSON 3 – SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEMS WATER AND AIR TRANSPORTATION 

1. Purchase of more planes, ships and boats.

2. Train more pilots and engineers.

3. Build more airports and seaports.

4. New and up-to-date equipment should be installed.

5. Properly and timely maintenance.

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher displays chart showing means of water and air transportations. 

3. Teacher organizes the pupils in groups or pairs to identify and classify means of transportations as water and air transportations.

Pupil’s Activities – Group all the means of transportation as water and air transportations.

4. Teachers asks pupils to differentiate between water and air transportations.

Pupil’s Activities – State the differentiate between water and air transportations.

5. Teacher uses pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson – water and air transportations.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of water and air transportations.

6. Teacher leads a discussion on the meaning and means of water and air transportations.

Pupil’s Activities – Explain the meaning of water and air transportations with appropriate examples.

7. Teacher displays chart showing different problems of water and air air transportation.

8. Teacher asks pupils in groups or pairs to identify and discuss the likely problems of water and air transportations in Nigeria.

9. Teacher uses pupil’s responses to discuss the main problems of water and air transportations.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify the problems of water and air transportations and suggest a possible solutions to them.

10. Teacher uses the problems in activity 9 to lead a discussion on the solutions to the problems of water and air transportation.

11. Summarizes each lesson on the board.
