TOPIC: PUNCTUATION MARKS – FULL STOP AND QUESTION MARK 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives – use punctuation marks particularly the full stop and the question mark correctly.

INSTRUCTION MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of selected passage from pupil’s book, supplementary reader, charts showing punctuation marks.

METHOD OF TEACHING

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

FOCUS LESSON

PUNCTUATION MARKS is a mark, such as full stop, comma, or question mark used in writing to separate sentences and their elements and to clarify meaning.

1. The full stop (.)

It is mark the end of a sentence that is a complete statement. For example – all their meals arrived at the same time.

2. The question mark (?)

It is used at the end of a question. For example – what is your name?

EXERCISE 

It rained heavily yesterday the roofs of many houses were blown off Father came home wet he was shivering with cold what am I going to do. 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.

3. Teacher displays chart showing full stop mark and question mark.

4. Teacher lets pupils identify and state their uses.

Pupil’s Activities – Identify the full stop mark and question mark.

5. Teacher uses the pupil’s reasonable responses to introduction the and explain the meaning of full stop and question marks using appropriate examples.

Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction.

6. Teacher makes sentences with any punctuation marks. For example – It rained heavily yesterday the roofs of many houses were blown off Father came home wet he was shivering with cold.

7. Teacher guides pupils to isolate the main ideas, use strokes in the right places. Replace them with full stops.

Pupil’s Activities – Use strokes in the right places to separate the main ideas with the aid of the teacher; Replace the strokes with the full stop to indicate the end of a complete thought i.e. a sentence, again with the aid of the teacher;

8. Explains why full stop are used. That’s, to indicate the end of a complete thought. Explains that each new sentence must begin with a capital letter.

Pupil’s Activities – Begin each new sentence with a capital letter.

9. Guides pupils on how to punctuate the passage correctly.

Pupil’s Activities – Complete the whole exercise by punctuating the whole passage correctly. Do more exercises on full stop and question mark.

Pupil’s Activities – Do on their own the punctuation of a similar passage written on the board by the teacher.

10. Teacher summary the lesson on the board using appropriate lesson evaluation.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson by responding correctly to the questions and write as instructed.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson – revision.

Teacher asks pupils to use full stop mark and question mark in the sentences,
