CONTENT OF THE LESSON

MEANING/DEFINITION OF AGRICULTURAL MECHANISATION

Agricultural mechanization is the process of development and application of machines such as tractors, harrows, ploughs, sprayers, planters, etc. in the farming process.

Agricultural mechanization may also be defined as the use of tools, implements, machines, equipment and technology in the cultivation of farm lands and processing of food.

Agricultural mechanization involves the substitution of crude farm implements and practices with advanced machines and systems of rearing plants and animals.

PROBLEMS OF AGRICULTURAL MECHANIZATION IN NIGERIA

The mechanization of the Nigerian agricultural system is constrained by many problems. Some of which are:

1. Land tenure system

2. Poverty and Inaccessibility of credit

3. Poor infrastructure

4. The poor state of infrastructural facilities in Nigeria is also a factor hindering agricultural mechanization.

5. Mechanized agriculture encourages mass production for export and future supply.

6. Illiteracy of the farmers

POSSIBLE WAYS OF IMPROVING AGRICULTURAL MECHANISATION

1. Amendment of the land use decree

2. Developing less expensive machines

3. Establishing agricultural engineering school for personnel and fabricate simple machines, etc.

4. Educating the farmers

5. Provision of improved access to credit.

6. Better government policies.

BENEFITS OF AGRICULTURAL MECHANISATION

1. Increase in food production

2. Increase foreign exchange

3. Increase in youth involvement

4. Improved agricultural processing and packaging

5. Attract more investment

6. Increase standard of living

7. Increase growth and development

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the students some questions; then, the teacher –

2. Discuss the meaning of agricultural mechanisation.

Student’s Activities – Define agricultural mechanisation.

3. Invites a guest lecturer on:

  • The problems of agricultural mechanisation.
  • The possible solutions to the problem of agricultural mechanisation.
  • The benefits of agricultural mechanisation.

Student’s Activities – Listen attentively to guest lecturer and ask questions.

3. Summarizes the lesson on the board.

Student’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.

LESSON EVALUATION

Ask students to:

1. Define agricultural mechanisation.

2. State 5 problems of agricultural mechanisation.

3. State the possible solutions to the problems of agricultural mechanisation in question 2.

4. state three possible ways of improving agriculture through mechanisation.

5. State 5 benefits of agricultural mechanisation.
