TOPIC – INTONATION PRACTICE (COMMAND AND REQUEST) 

 

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. Use the correct intonation for a definite affirmative command – ‘switch’ ‘off the light’, and ‘ring the bell’.

2. Use the intonation to charge an abrupt command into a request or polite command – ‘Ring the bell’. Ring the bell, won’t you? Would you wash the plates, please.

 

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of:

1. Course book – Macmillan Primary English Book 5 Page 55 D 

2. Recorded speech on command and request where available.

 

 

METHOD OF TEACHING 

Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.

THE CORRECT USE OF COMMAND AND REQUEST INTONATION 

When giving order and commands, the appropriate tune of voice is the falling intonation.

 

For examples –

Leave it on the table. ↘

Take that book down. ↘

Throw throw it away. ↘

Put your books in your bag. ↘

Take your hands out of your pockets. ↘

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Demonstrates the correct information to use in giving command and request.

Pupil’s Activities – Imitate the teacher or the tape recorded version in groups or individually.

3. Gives adequate oral drills.

Pupil’s Activities – writes series of sentences and read the falling intonation tune, then with the rising tune (or vice versa) and asks pupils the indicate which sense or shade of meaning conveyed by each utterance.

Pupil’s Activities – Reproduce sentences individually.

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
