By the end of the lesson, most pupils should have attained the following objectives –

CONTENT OF THE LESSON  

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Nigeria is a country of 36 states with a federal capital territory.

Each of the 36 states has its owns share political power with the federal government under the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Before the creation of states in 1967, Nigeria was ruled by different leaders in their respective region.

There are four (4) geopolitical regions with their governors Western Region, Eastern Region,  Northern Region and Mid Eastern Region

A state is a political territory with a absolute power, institutions and people within it.

General Yakubu Gowon created 12 states in 1967 to replaced regional administrations.

  • Rives State

 

3. Northern Region

  • Benue/Plateau State
  • Kwara State
  • Kano State

LESSON 2 – REASONS OF STATES CREATION IN 1967

The followings are the reasons of states creation in 1967 –

1. To give power to the minority.

2. To weaken the struggle for break up after the civil war.

3. To reduce inter ethnic rivalry.

4. To give equal power and opportunity for all.

5. To ensure equal representation in government.

6. To bring people to the government.

 

7. To complement federal government efforts in maintaining law and order.

8. To provide social amenities such as schools, hospitals, good roads, etc.

9. To foster rapid growth and development.

10. To ensure unity among states and in Nigeria.

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps – he/she,

1. Revises the previous lesson based on the pupil’s related knowledge or experience.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in lesson review.

2. Discuss the event that lead to creation of 12 state in 1967 by General Yakubu Gowon.

3. Uses the map of Nigeria to explain the meaning of state.

4. Makes a list of states and their regions.

5. Leads a discussion on the effects of state creation in 1967.

7. Summarizes each lesson on the board.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in the summary of the lesson and write as instructed.

 

 

CONCLUSION

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
