CONTENTS OF THE LESSON
INTRODUCTION
Citizenship education refers to the education and training provided to individuals to help them understand their rights, responsibilities, and roles as citizens of a country or community. The goal of citizenship education is to empower individuals to become informed, engaged, and active participants in their society, and to promote democratic values, social cohesion, and civic responsibility.

GOALS OF CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION
The goals of citizenship education are as follows –
1. Promoting Civic Knowledge – Citizenship education aims to provide individuals with an understanding of the history, laws, institutions, and values of their society, as well as an awareness of their rights and responsibilities as citizens.
2. Fostering Democratic Values – Citizenship education seeks to instill democratic values such as freedom, equality, justice, tolerance, and respect for diversity, and to promote active citizenship and civic engagement.
3. Developing Critical Thinking Skills – Citizenship education helps individuals develop critical thinking skills, enabling them to analyze information, evaluate arguments, and make informed decisions about social and political issues.
4. Encouraging Participation – Citizenship education aims to encourage individuals to participate in democratic processes and civic activities, such as voting, volunteering, advocacy, and community service.

MEANING AND TYPES CITIZENSHIP
MEANING OF CITIZENSHIP
Citizenship is the status of being a member of a particular country, with all the rights and responsibilities that come with it. This typically includes the right to vote, work, and reside in the country, as well as the obligation to obey its laws and pay taxes. Citizenship can be obtained through birth, descent, marriage, or naturalization, and varies from country to country in terms of the rights and privileges it confers.
TYPES OF CITIZENSHIP/MODE OF ACQUIRING CITIZENSHIP
Citizenship is the right of being a citizen of a country. A Nigerian citizen is a person whose parents come from Nigeria or obtained Nigerian citizenship by registration or naturalization.
1. Citizenship by Birth – This is known as country’s birth. A person automatically becomes a citizen of his/her birth.
2. Citizenship by Registration – This requires a person to become a citizen in the country he/she married because a marriage requires a registration.
3. Citizenship by Naturalization – This occurs when a person stays in a particular country for a very time usually 10 – 15 years. This is automatically by a statute. It may involve an application or a motion and approval by legal authorities.
4. Citizenship by Honour – This is usually given as a sign of recognition or respect for the various contribution made to humanity by persons who have distinguished themselves in various areas of endeavour government of the country can confer her citizenship on political figures, states men, sport icon, etc. as a mark of honour for the achievement and contribution to the global community.

DENIAL OF CITIZENSHIP
Citizens can be denied their citizenship in the event of the following:
1. In the event that one rejects one country and take up a citizenship of another country
2. When the individual refuses to acknowledge and pay due allegiance to the country.
3. In case of betrayal and spy, the person automatically loses his citizenship when the interest, image and sovereignty of the country is undermined.
PROCESS OF BECOMING A CITIZEN OF A COUNTRY
A citizen is a legal membership of a particular country with full right to claim a state as his/her own. The following are the process of becoming a citizen of a country –
