TOPIC: FORMAL INVITATION AS OPPOSED TO LETTERS
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to:
1. Write formal invitation.
2. Use the structures in formal invitation.
3. Distinguish a formal invitation from an informal one.
ENTRY BEHAVIOR
The pupils are required to already have learned formal and informal letters.
INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS
The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of course book and sample of invitation cards.
METHOD OF TEACHING – Choose a suitable and appropriate methods for the lessons.
Note – Irrespective of choosing methods of teaching, always introduce an activities that will arouse pupil’s interest or lead them to the lessons.

FORMAL INVITATION
Formal invitations are standard for events that call for formal dress, such as weddings. Addresses, dates, and times are clearly spelled out.
CHARACTERISTICS OF FORMAL INVITATION
- Name of the host – Mr. and Mrs ______
- Phrasing of the invitation – Cordially request or invites
- Kind of events – wedding, naming, birthday, etc.
- Date and time
- Venue
- Request to respond
- Dressing code/color of the day – champagne gold and peach

PRESENTATION
- To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
- To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
- Explains that in a formal invitation every thing is formal. The language is more polite. The invitation is done in writing not by word of mouth.
- Pupil’s Activities – Enumerate occasions for formal invitation.
- Pupil’s Activities – Give reasons for formal invitations – important people are going to be present and so on.
- Pupil’s Activities – Discuss the dress that would required on such occasions.
- Pupil’s Activities – Read the sample invitation cards provided by the teacher.
- Guides pupils to draft invitations.
- Pupil’s Activities – Draft formal invitation of their own, with the teacher guiding them.
- Supervises pupil’s activities.
- Pupil’s Activities – Enumerate occasions for formal invitation.
CONCLUSION
- To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
