1. define living things and non living things.

2. analyze the different between living things and non living things.

3. identify self as a living thing.

4. identify other living and non – living things in the classroom, school and at home.

The pupils can differentiate between living things and non living things.

 

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of charts and posters showing living things and non living things and audio and visual resources.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Living things are things that are alive. People, animals and plants are living things. They need air, water, and food to stay alive. Non – living things are things that cannot grow, move, breathe and reproduce. They do not have any kind of life in them.

 

LIVING THINGS 

Living things are things that are alive.

People, animals and plants are living things.

They need air, water, and food to stay alive.

 

EXAMPLES OF LIVING THINGS

1. Man

CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS

1. Feeding – All living organism need to take substance from their environment to obtain energy to grow and stay healthy.

2.  Movement – People move, birds fly, fish swim and plant move (by wind, water, activities of man and animal).

3. Growth – Human child, young plant and animals grows into an adult human, plant and animal.

4. Reproduce and have young – People have babies. Chicken lays eggs and a chick hatches from an egg. Cow have calf. Plants have seeds and grow new plants or man transplants to grow new ones.

5. Breathing and Respiration – Man and animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide.

6. Sensitivity – People and animals react to changes around them. They react to touch, light, heat, cold, sound, and so on.

7. Excretion – The removal of waste from is body. Waste in the body is poisonous. Urine is a waste. What we breathe out is a waste.

 

LESSON 2 – NON – LIVING THINGS 

Non – living things are things that cannot grow, move, breathe and reproduce. They do not have any kind of life in them.

Non – living things are things that are not alive. They do not need air, food or water. They do not move, grow and reproduce.

PREPARATION FOR NEXT WEEK LESSON 

Get a container fill with good soil and any crop of your choice.

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson by asking relevant questions based on what has taught and learnt.

2. Teacher displays charts/posters showing living things such people, animals and plants and non living things such as books, pencils, etc.

3. Teacher asks the pupils to carefully examine the charts/posters, identify and classify each item as either living things or non living things.

Pupil’s Activities – The pupils identify and classify each item as either living things or non living things.

4. Teacher uses the charts/posters and the pupil’s relevant responses to introduce the lesson and leads a whole class discussion on the meaning of living things and non living things.

5. Teacher initiates and guides discussions on characteristics of living things and non – living things.

To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
