CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION
Soil is the upper layer of the earth where plants grow.
It is one of the essential components of land.
It consists of particles of rock, different kinds of soil and organic material.
There are 3 major types of soil – sandy, loamy and clay soils.
MEANING AND PROPERTIES OF SANDY SOIL
Sandy soil is the loose parts of the soil used for building of houses and construction of roads.
The following are the properties of sandy soil,
1. It has large, loosely packed particles.
2. It does not hold water.
3. It is rough when rubbed between fingers.
4. Crops do not grow well on sandy soil.
5. Sandy soils are light brown.
LESSON 2 – ORGANISMS IN SANDY SOIL
Termites and earthworms are living organisms in sandy soil.
IMPORTANCE OF SANDY SOIL
The importance of sandy soil are as follows:
1. It is used for planting vegetables.
2. It is used for road construction.
3. It is used for building houses.
4. It is used for moulding block.
LESSON 3 – SUMMARY AND WEEKLY ASSESSMENT (TEST)
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Teacher organizes pupils in groups or pairs depending on the size of the class.
3. Teacher displays sample of sandy soil.
4. Teacher lets pupils identify and describe sandy soil.
Pupil’s Activities – Describe the colour, texture and particles of sandy soil.
5. Teacher uses the sample and pupil’s responses to introduce the lesson.
Pupil’s Activities – Pay attention to the lesson introduction to understand the concept of the lesson.
6. Teacher leads a discussion on the meaning and properties of sandy soil.
Pupil’s Activities – Identify the properties of sandy soil.
7. Teacher displays sample or chart showing termite and earthworm.
8. Teacher uses the chart in step 7 to discuss the living organisms in sandy soil.
Pupil’s Activities – Identify and draw the living organisms in the sandy soil.
9. Teacher discuss importance of sandy soil.
Pupil’s Activities – Analyze the importance of sandy soil in their communities.
10. Teacher summarizes the lessons on the board with appropriate lesson evaluation.
