PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson, the pupils should have attained the following objectives (cognitive, affective and psychomotor) and should be able to –
1. explain what a crop is.
2. name and identify different classes of crops.

The pupils can identify most of the local crops.

The teacher will teach the lesson with the aid of samples of local crops.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON
LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITIES
Teacher’s Activities – Display sample of different classes of crops such as yam, maize, orange and vegetable for the pupils to identify and state other similar crops.
Pupil’s Activities – Yam – potatoes, cocoyam, cassava, etc. Maize – guinea corn, millet, etc. Orange – mango, apple, etc. Vegetables – tomatoes, okra, etc.
Teachers remark – A great cheer for active participation. Yam, maize, orange and vegetable represent crops under different classes of crops. Lead the pupils to identify and discuss different classes of crops.

CLASSES OF CROPS
Crops are plants that is grown and harvested for foods. Crops can be classified as follows –
1. Tuber Crops
For example, tuber crops include potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, cassava, etc.
2. Grain Crops
For example, grain crops include rice, maize, guinea corn, wheat, millet, etc.
3. Fruit Crops
For example, fruit crops including orange, apple, guava, banana, carrot, water melon, etc.
LESSON 2 – CLASSES OF CROPS (CONTINUATION)
4. Vegetable Crops
For examples, vegetable crops include tomato, pepper, okra, cabbage, etc.
5. Ornamental Crops
For example, ornamental crops include lawn grass, hibiscus flower, sunflower, etc.
6. Oil Crops
For examples, oil crops include oil palm, groundnut, melon, soybean, etc.
7. Latex Crops
For examples, latex crops include rubber, gum arabica, Indian rubber, etc.
8. Fibre Crops
For examples, fibre crops include cotton, hemps, sissal, raffia, etc.
PRESENTATION
To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:
1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;
2. Presents and identify samples of different classes of crops.
Pupil’s Activities – Observe and identify by name each of the crops and state other similar crops.
3. Leads pupils to give examples of each classes of crops.
Pupil’s Activities – Follow the teacher’s lead to give examples of different classes of crops.
4. Summarizes the lesson on the board.
Pupil’s Activities – Copy as the teacher writes.
CONCLUSION
To conclude the lesson for the week, the teacher revises the entire lesson and links it to the following week’s lesson.
