By the end of the lesson, most of the pupils should have attained the following objectives –

1. mention the skills involved in middle distance races;

2. list the skills involved in middle distance races;

3. perform the take off action;

4. perform proper arm action, running and finish.

CONTENT OF THE LESSON

LESSON 1 – INTRODUCTION 

Race is the contest or competition of speed.

It also means running.

 

 

TYPES OF RACES

1. Sprints or Short Distance Races

2. Middle Distance Races

3. Long Distance Races

4. Hurdles and Relay Races

 

 

MEANING OF MIDDLE DISTANCE RACES 

Middle distance races are races that cover the 800 metres and 1500 metres track events.

Middle distance races are track races longer than short distance races.

 

 

TYPES OF MIDDLE DISTANCE RACE

Middle distance races covered the following races:

 

1. 800 METRES 

The 800 metres, or 800 meters, is a common track running event. It is the shortest common middle distance running event.

 

 

2. 1500 METRES

The 1500 metres or 1500 metres run is the first middle distance track event in athletics.

 

 

3. Mile run and 8000 m 

It may also be classified as middle distance races.

 

 

LESSON 2 – SKILLS INVOLVED IN MIDDLE DISTANCE RACES

1. The Start/Standing position

2. The Arm action

3. The Stride/Take off

4. The Running

5. The Finish

 

THE START/STANDING POSITION 

The runners assume the standing position following the command –

“on your marks”

“get set”

the “go”.

 

 

THE ARM ACTION 

The arms and hands are carried lower and the heels touching the ground.

 

 

THE STRIDE/TAKE OFF 

The stride is natural and the race is slower than that in the sprint.

 

 

THE RUNNING 

This is the actual running of the race.

 

 

THE FINISH 

This is the marking – out of the race thereby signifying the end of the race.

 

 

LESSON 3 – PRACTICE AND DEMONSTRATE 

Guides pupils to perform the following correctly,

1. The Start/Standing position

2. The Arm action

3. The Stride/Take off

4. The Running

5. The Finish

 

 

PRESENTATION

To deliver the lesson, the teacher adopts the following steps:

1. To introduce the lesson, the teacher revises the previous lesson. Based on this, he/she asks the pupils some questions;

2. Takes pupils out to the field to take part in short and middle distance races.

3. Asks pupils to tell the differentiate between the two races.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively in both races and different between them.

4. Uses the pupils responses to introduce and explain the meaning and basic skills for middle distance race.

Pupil’s Activities – Participate actively as the teacher explain meaning and basic skills of middle distance race.

5. Explains the skills involved in middle distance races.

Pupil’s Activities – Listen to the teacher and copy from the board.

6. Demonstrates the skills involved in middle distance races.

Pupil’s Activities – Practice all skills as demonstrated by the teacher.

8. Observes pupils demonstration and make corrections.

9. Summarizes each lesson on the board.
